Opinion The Humiliation of Davos Man - The real scandal of Davos isn’t that it’s taking over the world. It’s that it’s failing.

Davos, Switzerland

It’s that time of year. Corporate chieftains, policymakers, NGO warriors, journalists and intellectuals are heading to the Swiss Alps for the 54th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum. If the delegates are serious about this year’s theme, “Rebuilding Trust,” some hard conversations lie ahead.

On both the far left and the far right, conspiracy theorists see the WEF and its allies as an all-powerful network successfully imposing a nefarious agenda on the rest of the world. This reading gets Davos exactly wrong.

The real scandal of Davos isn’t that it’s taking over the world. It’s that it’s failing. The Davos agenda—a global security order, an integrated world economy and progress toward objectives including decarbonization, gender equality and the abolition of dire poverty—is controversial in some quarters and on some points but is neither secret nor particularly nefarious. But far from imposing this agenda on a captive world, the Davos elites are wringing their hands as the dream slowly dies.

Last year was another tough year for the Davos agenda. Russia’s war in Ukraine ground on, with Moscow holding an edge in what looks like a war of attrition. The Middle East erupted into chaos, with shipping disrupted in the Red Sea as the conflict escalates and expands. Relations between China and the West continued to deteriorate, with the Taiwan election results pointing toward further tensions in the coming year.

Conflict is bad for free trade, and the breakdown of the global security order is undermining the economic integration at the heart of the Davos agenda. The rift between China and the West is driving a decoupling on both sides. With both the European Union and the U.S. introducing restrictions on imports aimed at limiting the effect on domestic manufacturing of low-wage, low-regulation production in China and elsewhere, the goal of free trade recedes further into the distance every year.

Unsurprisingly, both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund are forecasting a slowdown in global economic growth. Predicting that global trade flows will be only 50% of the average in the pre-pandemic decade, the World Bank warns that the 2020s could be a lost decade for the world economy, with poor countries hardest hit.

As war spreads and the global economy slows, chances for progress on the Davos social agenda are fading. Topics like the energy transition and gender justice, however worthy and important, drop down the priority list when countries are waging or preparing for war. The number of desperate refugees, currently estimated at 114 million, inexorably grows. Violence against civilians accompanies the rising tide of war. Under these circumstances, human-rights groups and other social campaigners must focus on humanitarian crises rather than existing social problems.

Given this background, the Davos hills are alive with the sounds of failure. Davos conversations that used to be about how to take advantage of the level global playing field that U.S. presidents and allies sought to build after World War II and 1990 have shifted. The question now is how companies, and countries, can manage the risks of a disrupted world order. How do you manage supply chains in an era of U.S.-China rivalry? How do you adjust to the effective closing of the Red Sea, and perhaps the Strait of Hormuz, by Iran and its proxies? How does your country manage its security policy in a world where U.S. power seems to be waning and the comfortable assumptions of the past no longer hold?

The meeting’s “Rebuilding Trust” theme acknowledges that something has gone wrong. That is a good start, but it doesn’t go far enough. Lying Russian propagandists and Chinese attempts to influence American opinion are problems that need addressing, but people aren’t losing trust in their leaders because disinformation has muddled their brains. They are losing confidence because they sense that the establishment’s approach to the chief problems of the day isn’t working.

This isn’t, at its core, a crisis of trust. It is a crisis of competence.
Why would voters expect an “expert class” that was so wrong for so long about Russia, China, Iran and Covid to know how to cope with a challenge as difficult and multifaceted as the energy transition? Why would they trust European and American politicians who are failing so woefully to handle massive illegal migration to manage the rise of artificial intelligence?

“The emperor has no clothes!” is the cry of populists everywhere. To render this message ineffective, Davos Man doesn’t need image consultants and disinformation specialists. He needs to get dressed.

The worst part is knowing that they know the boomer dream of a post-scarcity, post-race, post-nation Star Trek world is just science fiction.
Post-scarcity is ultimately a matter of energy supply. Given sufficient energy, we can extract enough raw resources from our solar system to make the supply functionally infinite, at least for a couple of thousand of years. We're also not that far away from being able to manufacture elements directly, though only in small quantities, and the practicalities may prevent the process ever being viable for large-scale production.

The problem is, the davos set are doing everything in their power to prevent this, by forcing ever greater costs onto energy production and consumption and ever greater barriers to resource extraction and refinement. It's pretty clear that they want to lock us on this planet and stop us from ever reaching to the stars; they would rather rule over a dwindling population of obedient, illiterate peasants than allow humanity to flourish at the expense of their control.

a challenge as difficult and multifaceted as the energy transition?

There's not an "energy transition" let alone the energy transition, because there's nothing to transition to. Wind and solar are not it. They've always been supplemental sources at best, and due to their very nature, that's all they will ever be. So the only "transition" going on is trying to get us peasants used to rolling blackouts (see how well that's going in South Africa) and not being able to turn on a fucking light unless our "betters" tell us it's okay.

The only way to "transition" away from "muh fossil fuels" is to take all that money they're wasting on wind and solar, and start dumping it into building newer, better, safer nuclear power plants. Gen IV reactors, fission fragment, etc. Put money into fusion research that doesn't involve the use of exotic isotopes (looking at you, ITER), especially technologies that can capture energy in a more direct manner than "just another way to boil water."

But that won't happen, because I'm sure everyone in the WEF has ties to Solyndra levels of grift, and they don't want to lose their kickbacks from all these "green" energy companies that do fuck-all to actually come up with something.

And as an aside, if Putin wanted anyone to believe he's serious about Schwab and his cronies being "valid military targets", he'd do the world a favor and nuke Davos while they're all in one location.

The best pasrt of this year's Davos was Milei telling them to shove their socialist ideas up their ass.

That and that one guy telling Klaus Schwab to fuck off. Unfortunately he later apologized for it

I seem to remember the anarchist left 20 years ago were rioting to stop the WTO. I suppose now they love the WEF? Or was it the IMF. They all seem to be worshipped as a trilateral style front for the left. Also like how this is article is another 'world ends, poor hit hardest' style.

Unfortunately he later apologized for it
man that ruins it for me. Once you drop it just stick by it you don't owe these psychos anything. I hope that wasn't actually the case I did see the footage of him telling klaus to fuck off that was kino as hell. These people are nothing to be afraid of they're pussies klaus ran out of the room after just being told to fuck off.

They could stop it immediately. Easily and forever.... they're doing it on purpose even though nobody wants it.

Is this journalist in on the joke or merely himself propagandized past the point of basic logic and interpretation of observable reality? These bold Orwellian lies really freak me out.

yeah haha I went searching for it to see if I could find the apology and realized quickly I got duped. Still funny though wish it was real want to see these globohomo fags humiliated. Closest we got was when trump more or less told them they're all retarded and to stop with the doomsaying.

It was never about that. It was about the fact that these Elite Yuppie Boomers spent thousands, if not millions, in the Carbon Unit system investments that never produced fuck-all. Over 50 years ago, green energy slavery was pitched to them as the biggest money maker of all time- only it never manifested. Then some of them got together and decided this investment HAD to manifest by force for whatever cost and they would just pay the price by abusing the power it affords to compensate for it's devastating consequences afterwards.

The reality is, green energy is DEMOLISHING the environment. It's destroying everything from oceanic currents and sea life, excessive resource mining, and mass deforestation for solar panel plants. In terms of pollution, green energy is probably the biggest ecological disaster that's facing the planet since Chernobyl. The whole reason TPTB are growing through with it is only because they plan to use the excessive control over the population to try to artificially repair these things later. There's no closing Pandora's Box though in this regard. Reality is defeating them and people just aren't complying. You can see green energy losing support more and more.

As far as Davos goes, I wouldn't say they're losing. That's a bad word. I'd say they're struggling. They're still getting wins, just in different places. The US government is almost completely pozzed and taken over. But they've lost the public sector. The internet is yielding to them, as TRW has demonstrated. But they've garnered lots of opposition.

In reality you have to wonder why they're so open about this. Is it truly because they think they can't be systemically stopped? Or is it because they know other people and groups are trying to do what they're doing and they're just bringing it to public light?

I think there's something to be said about the things Klaus Schwab says. They're not isolated to Davos. He talks about these things as if they're an unstoppable force and these things ARE coming one way or another, whether Davos is the one behind it or not. Someone I know close to upper echelon people once told me that (and I'm paraphrasing) "there are no PTB. And if there are, they're so disjointed that there's probably dozens of PTB who all want different things. Nobody in government is uniform, they're all over the place. The President has very little power, he has some, but his staffers have more. If anything the Trump Presidency should've demonstrated that. But these organizations are all at odds with each other. It's barely organized chaos." I guess the best way to put it is our biggest problems is government bloat.

Then: "iT's JuSt A tHiNk-TaNk"
Now: "The think tank isn't able to act like a secret government, here's how that's a bad thing."

Yes, it is kind of funny how the trilateral commission has fallen out of favor as a conspiratorial organization, but Davos just kept bragging in public, on televisions.

Or the OG Club of Rome. At some point their wikipedia article even got deleted, there were some amazing rants in the article discussion, all gone now.

We are in the “looting the till” phase of collapse.

It turns out the WEF was another hothouse flower, only able to flourish under the warm lights of zero percent interest rates.

When I have been at my rantiest, my husband kept pointing out the WEF smelled like an affiliation scam, bilking nepo mediocrities in government and business for membership fees by convincing them that they only needed each other to rule the world, and they could safely discount their citizens’ and customers’ desires and needs.

While I don’t think they can actually implement their desired panopticon dystopia, they can certainly destroy the delicate gossamer of civilization on their way out. Fuckers.

off topic. are you a wahman or a gay?

if wahman, this is a very impressive post and contributed -0.1 daily woman hate to my total

I think your analysis is good if optimistic. I am not hopeful that we will see mass noncompliance and that these fuckers aren't puppets of the actually powerful degenerates out there. Their gay clique might collapse but the ones in charge are just gonna keep airbursting poz and destruction.

These people have massive savior complexes. They want to feel like they are heroes while unleashing their dystopian nightmare and any kind of pushback makes them feel bad, sad and angry. They want statues of dead white men replaced with ones of themselves for “solving” the climate “crisis.” Narcissism doesn’t quite adequately describe how highly they think of themselves.
Megalomaniac is a word for precisely this reason.

“The emperor has no clothes!” is the cry of populists everywhere. To render this message ineffective, Davos Man doesn’t need image consultants and disinformation specialists. He needs to get dressed.

No, he needs to be hung from a gibbet, and then his body hacked to pieces and thrown into a swamp. We don't need emperors.

Maybe when they stop talking about unfavorable election results as some sort of egregious crime against them, their agendas and democracy, or trying to subvert it, people will be more open to hearing their ideas... maybe.
I've heard their ideas. Their ideas seem to converge around the grand vision of a transnational socialist superstate that closely resembles a hazy kind of technocratic neo-feudalism on a global scale. Their slogan 'You will own nothing and be happy' is the cry of a master to a well-fed slave. It's dystopian, totalitarian, anti-human, and I would fight such a future with my last breath.

Didn't Sun Tzu say something about appearing weak?
No, he stressed inscrutability. Leave your enemy guessing at your intentions. Appearing weak is like deliberately lowering your guard in boxing in order to provoke a punch from your opponent because you have a much-practiced counterpunch waiting for him. That's a tactic, not a strategy.
