I’ve heard of this book mentioned in passing through the YouTube Book “community”; with many praising it for its wokeness due to having a strong black slay queen as both the author and protagonist.

Because I am a cheapskate, I’ll be reading this book via Internet Archive, as it is found here. Kudos to whoever decided to upload this piece of anti-white literature.

Yes, you read that right: anti-white literature. A Young Adult Book no less.

Perhaps I should make something clear; I’m going into this book blind, and only know that it’s praised by some of the most vitriolic anti-whites on BookTube, BookTok and BookTwitter. As such, I’m going in expecting anti-whiteness right off the bat.

Will I be proven wrong or reading this just make this entire website even more racist than before? Will there be a white character who says “nigger” in this book? There better be or it’s not black enough. Let’s find out!

Chapter 1

Um, I’m not sure if this is the archive fucking up or if this page is actually supposed to be in this bold shade of red. If so, this sets the mood rather nicely.

I love how you can tell immediately that this story takes place in the USA, because of names like “Kenya”, “Big D”, ect and the fact that there’s rap music playing at a (presumably) trashy house party.

Great opening, I love it. Adds to the immersion that I’m surrounded by rapper Americans.
IMG_1832.jpeg
“Starr” is a first when it comes to hood names, I’ll give the author that for smashing my expectations.
IMG_1833.jpeg
I was going to make a black dad joke, but I think the story is just doing it for me at this point cause lmfao talk about dysfunctional.

Also, what kind of name is “Seven?” Don’t tell me he has siblings named One through Six like this is Cybersix.

Either that, or the author has already run out of name ideas.

IMG_1834.jpeg
Kenya sounds like a bitch who enjoys being one for no reason.
IMG_1835.jpeg
Is “Stank-Eye” an Ebonics term for “stink eye” that Anglo Canadians like to say?
IMG_1836.jpeg
Not gonna lie, reading Ebonics in print is starting to give me a headache. If you ever needed a reason to not write down accents in books all the damn time, here’s exhibit A.

It makes me feel like I’m reading tweets on Black Twitter.

>Chris

Finally, a normal sounding name you’re most likely to find in America.

IMG_1838.jpeg
IMG_1839.jpeg
These people sound exhausting to be around.
IMG_1840.jpeg
Kenya just invited Starr to the party to bully her in front of the other hoodrats.

I bet she’s the villain of this book since so far, she’s written as the mean-girl archetype you typically see in these YA Books

>Saying “Fuck” in a Young Adult novel

Call me a dinosaur, but when did that become acceptable to put into a book that elementary schoolers could potentially read? The reason I bring this up is because YA is targeted towards 12-17 year olds, and there are schools that run from kindergarten to grade 8.

The standards must have become even more loose than I previously thought possible.

IMG_1842.jpeg
Oh no, the protagonist has a parasocial relationship with a mediocre rapper.
IMG_1843.jpeg
Must… refrain… from making sneaker jokes!
IMG_1844.jpeg
Finally, we get some action in the story!

Never have I been so happy to read about a shooting in the first chapter.
IMG_1845.jpeg
“Can’t have a party without someone getting shot” is my favorite line in this book so far. I’m going to make use of this quote in my day to day life.
IMG_1846.jpeg
I am disappointed that the gunfire wasn’t caused by an evil police state but it’s instead gang bangers.

Are we sure this is meant to say “Fuck white people”?
IMG_1847.jpeg
This whole situation sounds like a nigga moment:
IMG_1848.jpeg
I accidentally cut off the last sentence, but it’s lights flashing in the rear view mirror.
I didn’t bother fixing it because you can see it for yourself in the link to the archive I provided above.

Otherwise, that concludes the first chapter. As I said earlier, I’m not entirely sure I think this would be appropriate for a 12 year old to read.

Well that was uhhh… something. On one hand, it’s feels like it was written by a white chick who hasn’t interacted with blacks before. On the other, if American Kiwis are accurate with their racism then this is spot on.

I’ll let the local racists decide if this is an accurate depiction or not.

Damn, that was the most casual conversation about a family member getting cancer. "Oh yeah, my grandma is sick; she got the cancer." "Aw, that sucks." "She's on chemo or something."
