Handmaid's Tale suffers from a common misconception on the left regarding the "Religious Right": that it is in any way a unified, monolithic group capable of maintaining a widespread grip on power without immediately succumbing to factionalism and splintering. It wouldn't last any longer than the leadership sitting down at the table to try and work out what their new fundamentalist state's doctrinal principals will be.
If it matters any, in the book it was explicitly stated that there were dissident Christian sects like Baptists fighting the GIlead regime, and sort of winning. Haven't read the new book or watched any of the TV show.

You could say the same thing about Islam, but they still managed to field ISIS, the Taliban, and the rise of the Ayatollahs.

Margaret Atwood didn't put anything in her book that hasn't happened somewhere.
IIRC, the original novel was originally meant as an allegory for the Iranian Revolution and the rise of the Ayatollahs.
I will give credit where credit is due that at least as far as the original novel goes the premise of what if something like what happened in the middle east happened in the US isn't the most implausible premise someone has come up with.

However it's laughable in today's world, the only mysoginistic movement taking away women's rights is the transgender movement.

I didn't know this thread was still going. This show has so many problems, yet the thing I hate most about it is the libtard cat ladies who watch it and cannot discuss it without screeching ORANGE MAN BAD and hurling used tampons at anyone walking by their piss-infested apartment.

I finally started watching the show. Hoo boy. They should have called it "You reap what you sow. Neck yourself, catlady."

The premise is interesting and the world-building is excellent but you can tell that that producers are using Current Year™️ politics to try to sabotage the show as much as possible.

In the first 2 minutes of the series, we see that the main character, a white woman, has a relationship and a bi-racial kid with a black man. Everyone knows exactly why they did that: so they can say, right off the bat, that if this show makes you uncomfortable, you are a racist fuck.

Of course, the best neo-natal doctor Gilead could find was... wait for it... a black woman. But I thought it was hilarious when she told them to disconnect the baby from those (((machines))) and it was doing more harm than good. ROFL.

The show does take the piss out of feminism and Western women, with Offred even saying, "feminism is always needing a man to save you."

The handmaids when they get captured: "AWWW, HELL NAW! I ain't having some rich fuck's baby! I am busting out of here! I am more than just a pair of ovaries!"

The handmaids as soon as they feel the baby's first kick: "I am willing to risk my life and the lives of my friends to protect this baby." Gee, I thought carrying a child to term against your will was the Holocaust times 1000 according to feminists, but these handmaids are happy as fuck when they get knocked up, literally days after they tried to escape or commit suicide.

The only woman in the show that is justified in her actions is Serena, and even she is a total bitch. The rest are just roasties and twitter thots that had no idea how much worse shit could get, and now crying in their sleep when actual tyrants are running things.

One of the main characters had someone else's kids for a quarter million dollars in the Before Time, and then wonders why society is fucked beyond belief a few years later. That quarter million should have been the canary in the coal mine that things were only going to get worse.

tl, dr: The only straight male character who is a good guy is Luke, and he is black (because, of course he fucking is).

Why did catladies so hijack the culture? Was it just the money Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey made?

It's funny how it didn't start off as something political before it got nothing but political.

I get this sick feeling in my stomach thinking about what this show represents and what the kind of people who are big fans of it are like, I don't even consider myself some diehard traditionalist, but the opposite end of the spectrum, people who make it a crusade to snuff out even form of decency or what makes a society actually function, are nauseating.

The people who keep society running are doing exactly that. When they're not working they are at home with their families and grilling. The people who crusading against decency and good productive people are unproductive parasites who should have been purged periodically.

The first two seasons, the world building was exquisite. Season 3 was tepid and season 4 is outright bad. Everything since June left Boston has been nonsensical.

Why is there no security for June? How is she allowed to go to the grocery store? If Canada is also having a fertility crisis like Gilead, how is it safe for Nichole to go to the grocery store? Where does all the food in the grocery store come from? How did Luke and Moira move out of refugee housing into that nice, furnished house when he doesn’t appear to be gainfully employed and she volunteers with an NGO? Why were they apparently in the refugee apartment for 6 years? When did Emily get back together with whatsername? How did Rita become so chummy with Emily and Moira? Why does everyone from Gilead live in Toronto and not, say, Montreal or Ottawa? Why is everything so dark? Are there other people in the brutalist prison, or just the Waterfords? Why is the US ambassador to Canada in charge of the prisoners? Why are such high-value war criminals not in a more secure prison?

If Gilead is such a terrible regime that people get vanned for talking to the wrong person, are we still hanging out with the same 10 or so people we were hanging out with in the very first episode?????

My ability to suspend disbelief has been fractured and I’m not sure it’s coming back.

I agree, I don't understand how June can get away with so much shit. You would think that the others would see her as a huge liability and would ostracize her because they don't want their fingers/eyes/tongues removed, or sent to the Colonies. How many times will these Handmaids, Marthas, Guardians, Wives and even Commanders risk their lives for some dumpy Handmaid who won't shut the fuck up? Speaking out of turn and asking your boss about their personal lives (like the health of their wives) can get you short-listed for a pink slip in the real world, so I think June needs to get to Canada or on the Wall soon because it is getting ridiculous how she can keep causing trouble like this.

My earlier comment about how the producers just had to fucking have June be in an interracial marriage in the before time has bit them in the ass. When Hannah's new mom tells June "she has your eyes" it totally took me out of the show. No the little black girl with brown eyes does not have the same eyes as Elizabeth Moss, fuck you very much. That line was probably in the book (where everyone was white) and the producers were either too lazy or stupid (or both) to remove it. They could have, you know, just made Luke and Hannah to be white, but that would have given two white people acting gigs, and that is the opposite of what Hollywood wants.

I think it is funny that the only good guy, Luke, committed a self-own by brining a baby to a protest like an idiot, and got doxed by Gilead as a result. Since June tells him that Nicole is not a rape baby (because she totally fell in love with a member of the secret police, which is a plot device that only makes sense to dumb people), he should offer a trade to Gilead: Hannah for Nicole.

tl;dr: June is a roastie that has sex with black men and actual fascists. But you should root for her because she has a vagina (or something).

it's a surprisingly short walk from 'man why couldn't you just let me play videogames in peace' to 'I will make the handmaid's tale a reality just to shut these whores up'
