The more I think of it now, the more I come to the conclusion that the biggest problem here was splitting the game up the way they have and will. I know I'm repeating myself here, but a lot of the padding and things which they over-indulged in, should, could, and ought to have been avoided if they had split the game into two long parts with the first part covering disk 1 and the second the rest of the game. Consider the following :

1) The underground secret Shinra facility that the crew goes to in Chapter 13 was pretty much completely pointless and superfluous too because we'll see something on par with this with the Nibelheim flashback (never mind Hojo's lab). The only thing I can think of as to why they added this part was to give some weight to a throwaway line by Cloud to Elmyra about how Shinra wouldn't have had any problems experimenting on Aeris as if Cloud honestly needed or cared for her approval to go rescue Aeris. Also this part seemed more Barret orientated, which is nice, but again is unnecessary since we could just give Barret his own story moment later on in Corel.

2) Next, we didn't really need that part regarding Leslie telling the party how they can get up top. It's an ok sub-plot for this game, but a completely unnecessary one if this game was all of disk 1 (at least all the mandatory stuff). It doesn't help that you go through much of the sewer level again along with fighting its boss. Hek, they probably could have tried tying this sub-plot together with the Wutai-Yuffie subplot from the original in a later installment.

3) I'd judge Chapter 4 similarly as above though not as harshly. Then again, as amusing as Jessie was, the game has enough going on with the love triangle of Cloud, Tifa, and Aeris. It doesn't need another character fan-girling over Cloud or necessarily having Cloud open up more to the people around him when Aeris was more than able to do that. They probably ought to have considered this less of a full fledged chapter and more of a side-quest. And before any one says it, I do know that this chapter sort of elaborates on the whole Wutai-Avalanche thing that Shinra wants to exploit amongst the population, but again, I'm trying to look at what's more important for a more condensed remake series.

4) They wouldn't have been lazy in not allowing you to play as Red XIII.

5) As said before, they wouldn't had to have overplayed their hand with Sephiroth, Aeris, or the meteor apocalypse if this installment was all of disk 1's mainline story.

6) I'm not sure about the Corneo Colliseum part. For the time being I'd probably opt to keeping it since it was fun and funny and it helps bond Aeris and Cloud together and not just in terms of story. My main issue with it is that if feels sort of like the underground Shinra facility, that is, something they'll pretty much replicate later on in Golden Saucer's Arena.

7) I'm also not sure about the Ghost train station Chapter. It also doesn't add much to the big picture, but I liked it a lot although that's because I was preferential to Aeris in this remake. Maybe they could have kept it since it wasn't too long, it gives the characters (not the player which was done earlier) the heads up that yes, Shinra will annihilate sector 7 (although that's also something they harped on too much), and it seemed to reinforce both the otherworldly sense Aeris has and her loneliness as a child.

8) And last and certainly not least, they probably wouldn't have had chapter 18 if the series was faithfully remade. They probably could have avoided the "Whispers" as well at least with the way the remake presented them. I think it would have been far more palatable if they had shown up in the Temple of the Ancients or Cosmo Canyon or maybe they would only be connected with those people with numbered tattoos and black robes (which is something I thought they were going to do at first) or just have only Aeris (and maybe...just maybe only Cloud too) see them.

I love that I can actually say that the sequel idea I had in my head is better than anything Nomura can do now.

Put me in Square I'll do it for a pack of smokes.

This was retribution for Versus XIII. Re:Mind showed Nomura was still upset about that, and I genuinely get the feeling the plot stuff in Remake is him being spiteful. He lost 6 years of his life only to have his project snatched away from him, so he figures he'll waste 5 years of Square Enix's lives.

"I harness the burning anger in my heart into what I create." was a quote he made about 3 years after Versus XIII was reworked into XV. I do think that for Nomura, darkness is the heart's TRUE essence.

Technically, its more of a re-imagining than a remake, but they didn't use that term because people just wanted a straight FF7 remake.

What exactly is a "re-imagining" - just sounds like another way to say remake.

Do "re-imaginings" acknowledge OG games to the point it influences characters in a "re-imagining"? I don't see any other way this isn't a sequel, you have 3 whispers that are supposed to represent OG Cloud, Tifa, and Barrett along with Sephiroth's motives in this game to change due to knowing the results of the OG game.
 
I wouldn't really solely blame Nomura for whatever controversial stuff (I'm early on the story) because you can't forget about Nojima, the writer. He also wrote FFX and a few years ago wrote an official story, supposedly leading to a potential FFX-3, where Tidus Is Dead And Doesn't Know It Yet Again and Sin is Back Again, then saying that this was the real intent of the extended X-2 epilogue all along.
 
I have watched several hours of gameplay of new FF VII and You might be shocked, I didn't liked it.

What struck me in few cut-scenes is how lustful are Tifa and Jessie to squish Cloud's cock. Like there's no other context between these characters other than score ex-SOLDIER cute looking boy with nicely build triceps.
I played some FF XV and I might be getting old but the duration of battles with even simplest grunts is unbearable. What have happened to grinding? From what I saw all battles are predetermined. You encounter the enemies You must beat to proceed. The same error they committed in FF XIII is in FF VII:R and should be long gone. I don't know how they screwed this up but world from the original seemed bigger and more open. Now there are long hallways with one way in and one way out. The mini-map is worthless because You can't get lost. The way forward is always the best route. Maybe game gets better after You leave Midgar and becomes more open but why it can't be good now?

From the things I like is voice of Matt Jones as Wedge who You might know as Badger from Breaking Bad.

Heavily depends on how much you can tolerate Nomura's bullshit. Graphics are good, combat is good. You might even love it if you're on board with, or can ignore, the weird changes. Otherwise you might hate it. It's very hard to give a generalized recommendation on.

Never played the original and have no attachment to it emotional or otherwise.

I enjoy the combat and it looks pretty. I'm not up to the bullshit ending so I'm still on the fence.

While I basically bought an original PS1 for FF7, I even had a promotional VHS tape they released for the game that I watched when I was a kid. I have 0 emotional connection to it now since its been so long. I only really care if its interesting. I can tolerate Japanese videogame insanity as long as its funny or entertaining or done well.

I can't stand spiteful, objectively stupid bullshit. And until I see the result for myself, I'm up in the air.

A re-imagining is essentially taking something, carrying over similar attributes, but putting them in vastly different situations. There are common threads, but imagined as something else. So you've got your similar characters, their similar pasts, but then you're throwing in a time travel story along with it, which strays from the plot.

Its not really a direct sequel, its not really a re-make, its more like a 'What-If' Marvel Comic, which is what a re-imagining is. "What happens if there's an alternate dimension and the bad guys can see it after the events of the original?"

Now why they did this, uh, I don't know. It seems like a dumb thing to do.
 
I haven’t played it, so I can’t judge any of the gameplay elements, but from what I have gathered watching some of the clips, a lot of the emotional resonance in this version seems to be built on the idea that the player is already familiar with this story, and that is leading Square-Enix to playing their cards very early and without subtlety. Perhaps that’s unavoidable, but it comes across like the callbacks that would normally be reserved for a sequel. “Hey, remember that thing you liked? Here it is.” When the demo came out, I felt as if I was one of the few people who thought that impact of the recreated pull back was neutered by all the extra crap they threw in. It appears that this is sort of a recurring theme, particularly with how Sephiroth is introduced. I guess I should’ve seen that coming given how he was lazily inserted into Advent Children. I do appreciate some of the more subtle touches, like when Tifa goes “huh” when Cloud mentions that it’s been five years since they were last together, as well as a lot of the new dialogue that allows the characters to expand a bit. In all honesty, if it weren’t for the Compilation of FF7 projects that essentially killed my enthusiasm for the fandom, I’d probably be all over this. Square seems to have a better understanding now as to why people love the original, but not to the point where they still don’t go afield once in awhile
 
Oh well at least I won't waste money on this but I'm so disappointed, we waited for so long and we get Nomura's autism land? It's the greatest April's fool prank ever. It being Midgar only was a huge red flag plus Nomura being involved, we were just so focused on the gameplay and that's one aspect that is actually cool and I loved it from the demo.

Seriously tho, fuck Nomura. The ego he has to just put his autism in a work he didn't create? Sounds like someone we know well. Dude just can't help himself.
