Culture The “extraordinary step” Stephen Colbert took to diversify his writers’ room - Spoiler: It was sex based discrimination in hiring decisions

Stephen Cuckbert is no stranger to insane levels of SJW virtue signalling. This time, he may have broken the law in doing so. Read on.

WOMEN ONLY The “extraordinary step” Stephen Colbert took to diversify his writers’ room By Leah FesslerAugust 15, 2018 Comedy is what standup comedian Lynn Harris describes as the “ultimate outsider art,” which is why it’s always been odd to her that white men dominate the genre. “One engrained definition of comedy is that it’s used to punch holes in power,” says Harris, who started a company aimed at developing female comedic talent. “So why aren’t the people who have the least power in charge?”

Stephen Colbert, host of the CBS comedy show The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, is intent on answering this question. White men have ruled late-night comedy on American television since the medium was invented. But as racism and sexism dominate the headlines—including those coming out of the White House—diversity in entertainment (and all industries) is more essential than ever. Colbert discussed this disconnect during a recent TimesTalks conversation with Sopan Deb, a culture reporter for the New York Times.

Upon launching The Late Show in September 2015, Colbert says he thought about gender and racial diversity in the writers’ room “very specifically.” “I had been very frustrated at the old show,” Colbert told Deb, referring to the show he previously hosted, The Colbert Report, which aired on Comedy Central from 2005 to 2014, “about my inability to find diverse candidates for the show. And it was late in that show that I came to realize that it was my naiveté thinking that … the usual process would get you the unusual room.”

Colbert says that his search for diverse talent didn’t truly progress until he quite literally asked recruiters and agents to stop sending him anyone besides women:

“We would say, you know, it’s very important, we want writers of color, we want women, and you would get 150 packets and there would be eight women. And we’re like, ‘God, that’s so frustrating.’ Until I said, ‘No, only women’—then I got 87 women. And I thought, ‘Where were these people before?’ And that was sort of the realization of my naiveté, that it’s not enough to say you want it, you have to go to the not-ordinary step.

I think there’s thankfully some changes going on in the way women are perceived by the agents and managers and sort of word of mouth in the comedy world. But we realized we had to take an extraordinary step to get an extraordinary room. And now it’s half, you know, half white guys and a half either women or writers of color.”

Colbert’s “extraordinary step” to elevate female applicants is a profound act of allyship, on par with his outspoken disapproval of his boss, CBS chief executive Les Moonves, who was accused of sexual harassment by multiple women who said his behavior dated back decades.

Until 1964, sexual harassment wasn’t considered a fireable form of sex-based discrimination under the US constitution. As the #MeToo Movement demonstrates, sexism and racism continue to ravage women’s professional opportunities, confidence, and upward mobility in every industry. It’s nice to see men like Colbert acknowledging the need for women to make up lost ground, and comedy is terrific place to start.

After all, teaching girls to perform and be funny, and providing them with female comedians as role models, is a feminist act. It’s a way for women to literally narrate their own experience—and there’s no better form of control than that. As decades of diversity efforts have illustrated, shifting deep-rooted power dynamics is no easy feat. Perhaps the answer is to blow up the molds. Drastic as it may seem to only consider applicants of one gender or race, such has been the case in favor of white men for centuries. It’s high time to flip the script until the rest of us catch up.

Most SJW virtue signalling is just trumpeted horseshit of zero value, but this lays bare the attitude and aims if the movement. It's not to establish equality, but to actively discriminate on the basis of sex and race. Just discrimination the SJWs are okay with, being hypocritical power hungry bigots.

Of course, this kind of thing isn't legal. Sex based discrimination has been outlawed for a long time, ironically first passed to protect women and POCs from discrimination. That's Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII), which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

Colbert's statements above, his confession that he discriminated on the basis of sex in his hiring decisions is a golden invitation to any male writer that had been turned down to sue. It would be a win-win scenario: if it's true he gets a big cash payout while serving up a lesson in equality, if it was just fake virtue signalling Colbert is revealed as a liar to his RRREEEing base. Anyone want to start shopping for a lawyer?

As a final take away, consider this quote
Until I said, ‘No, only women’—then I got 87 women. And I thought, ‘Where were these people before?’

At the bottom of the barrel, Stephen.

Colbert as a character worked because he was such a cartoonish lampoon of then-conservatives.

Now that Colbert is just Colbert, he lost that veneer of "this is all just a joke" and it's unfunny. It's just propaganda disguised as comedy.
If CBS and Viacom re-merge, I hope he returns to CC with his old character and replaces Trevor Nofunny. You have to be special kinds of shit to miss David Letterman and Jon Stewart.

if it's true he gets a big cash payout while serving up a lesson in equality, if it was just fake virtue signalling Colbert is revealed as a liar to his RRREEEing base.
This just seems wildly optimistic. Where's option c: Colbert is a hypocrite, nobody cares because he's on the right side of history? Because it seems like the option most have gone with.

Well, the guy is now a living South Park meme. This doesn't surprise me, what does is that the discrimination law does protect men in the US. Thought it would apply only to women and coloureds.

I would guess that no woman with an ounce of self-respect would even consider this. Of course, that doesn't mean that there won't be any takers. I think we all have a pretty good idea what types of people will turn up at Colbert's doorstep. And he will find out pretty soon, too.

And that's eventually what'll get there heads kicked in.

So it's women you hate. Well that I can understand. Joking aside there are many hilarious women, unfortunately any humour is probably scrubbed out in a bubble of social wokeness.

I know that there are funny women, but comedy has always been a man's game for what I imagine are a number of reasons. If you, in your own head, were to make a list of the best comics to ever live - how long until you get to a woman? How much longer do you get to a woman who isn't Wanda Sykes?

The more this guy vomits unfunny shit every night, the more I'm convinced that the WRITERS for the Colbert Report were the funny ones and Colbert himself was just a convenient puppet for them to use.

By himself, he's preachy, one-note, and boring.

I'm very sad about the current state of Colbert but never forget the size of his balls during the early parts of his career when he was making comedy to be funny instead whatever he's doing it for now.

Very true, hitchens was on point regarding this issue. The funniest women stand out perhaps because so many focus on topics specific to the gender. Ladies that can be 'one of the lads' rule the roost by disregarding stereotypes. I miss the spoof Bill O'Reilly ffs

Because women aren't funny

Definitely worth the listen.

Lots of people in the US have stupid ideas, but the law itself is implemented pretty well.

There's a long tradition of distrusting government power here. So while SJWs really wish they could discriminate (but not be discriminated against) and censor and generally engage in bitchy tyrannical shit, the opportunities to do through the government are limited.

Our anti-discrimination laws don't try to do sketchy social engineering bullshit that SJWs want, because we specifically don't trust our government to do it properly. They'd fuck it up. We keep things simple, and just say you can't discriminate against anyone because of a protected class.

Heh, whenever the topic comes up I always like to bring up how men keep suing Hooters for discriminating against hiring men.

When dipshits wax poetic about how they wish they could discriminate against white people, I remind them of anti-semitic Jewish quotas. Jews worked hard to get into colleges and qualified in great numbers (considering their population), but for a period of time some colleges restricted how many jews they would admit. The idea is that jews are too good at academia, so we have to hobble them so the gentile can have a chance.

But doing that to white people to protect black people is the exact same thing.

And it's ultimately damaging to society. You want the best person for the job, period. Example:
After City College, Salk enrolled in New York University to study medicine. According to Oshinsky, NYU based its modest reputation on famous alumni, such as Walter Reed, who helped conquer yellow fever. Tuition was "comparatively low, better still, it did not discriminate against Jews, ... while most of the surrounding medical schools—Cornell, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale—had rigid quotas in place." Yale, for example, accepted 76 applicants, in 1935, out of a pool of 501. Although 200 of the applicants were Jewish, only five got in.
That's Jonas Salk, the man who cured polio.

I think that women can and have been funny. But the problem is that they're very one note and always talk about one or two things: relationships and sex. That's about it. A third thing being domestic life. Men tend to talk about anything even if minorities tend to talk about race but it all depends of course.

RIP Charlie Hill.

What pisses me off most about Stephen Colbert isn't just that he's become insanely unfunny, it's also that he blatantly became the very thing he frequently mocked during the Report, only on the opposite side of the political spectrum.

Colbert spent most of the Report's run mocking deluded Republicans who were trying to look for any way to get Obama kicked out. And it was funny because a lot of those guys were pretty crazy. Now though? Colbert's unironically become that thing he ridiculed for ten years, except now it's okay because it's Trump and it's his side that's doing it. That's what really makes my blood boil, and it's made me realize how much of a fucking hack he is.

I'm split. By all means, your employability should be based on competence and not gender but being a realist, that involves turning on middle aged men whilst you serve them a burger.

I'm a fan of that Canadian Katherine Ryan, but in fairness I could be looking through thirsty tinted glasses because she would get quite a seeing to.

The funniest women are those that can banter.

Most cannot.

Insulting Bush during the Bush era didn't require brass balls.

That never happened. Jews still benefit from having no discrimination against them (unless they fall under white and don't try to overtly identify as Jewish) and still benefit from rampant nepotism and tribalism.

RIP Charlie Hill.
If you listen to the video, Adam Carolla doesn't say women aren't funny. He's been accused of saying that, but it's not really what he said.

Though in general, I think there's some fields that men excel in. I think the bell curve for men in those fields is flatter and broader. Women are clumped near the average center. Men have more outliers, both in the good and bad direction. No one remembers the losers though.

Men would be the orange line.

Heh what? Jewish quotas were definitely a thing in the US.
