From the place I came into this, the "conspiracy" was just a framing device used to call Ethan Ralph and Toad McKinley homosexuals and/or sellouts. It took off completely unexpectedly to everyone, which is why PPP seemed like he was making shit up as he went along. Because that's exactly what was happening

That's true, but the conspiracy theory is that everybody connected to NP2 is going out of their way to suppress mention of those DMs (Nick, Josh, Toad, Jim, etc.). It starts with the DMs. It starts with Dick and Jamie.
I don't think Dick formed an army of NP2 users at gunpoint, or via blackmail, to suppress any of this. Like the OP says, it's more likely nobody really gave much of a shit about them.
However, I do think he's probably rattled by the DMs getting out. It shows another, more vulnerable, side of Dick interacting with women. One that's quite a bit different than "I like your shoes." I think he knows people will look at him differently now.
