No and to my knowledge, he only started asking for money when he actually needed it.
When he first started his patreon, I'm pretty sure he strongly alluded to having trouble irl and needing money.
His content output after was insane aswell, he wasn't 100% sticking on schedule but it's the closest he's ever got which leads me to believe that he really did want to start using youtube like a legitimate job and source of income.

The criticism of the New Project 2 is great for the narrative, however I don't think that Dick ever really mentioned that he cared about making a super slick actual competitor to Patreon. He was upfront and honest about the site being bare bones. I think he even said, it's not pretty, it doesn't have any of the extra functionality inbuilt into Patreon but it serves the function of allowing creators another option.

The initial conception of the site was mostly just to shit on Dave Rubin and Jordan Peterson who virtue signal about being deplatformed and who said that they were going to make their own site yet never did it.
