Nah, I agree with your Occam's razor explanation. The possibility of it just "sitting there", with convoluted explanations, requires a lot of assumptions and justifications. The money being fraudulently spent with convoluted/duplicitous explanations is far simpler in my opinion.

Which would then escalate things from charity fraud to tax fraud, as they were claiming they had ($600,000?) cash remaining on their filings. That said, I wouldn't be surprised that even if they were just spending it, they kept some of it in case they had to make a donation to someone in the event that they were caught.

Besides the returns themselves, what I found really damning was the fake quote from the prior (long fired) Dean of the UCSF. There really is no good explanation for that deception.

It may sound reasonable to do so, but maybe they just wanted to discuss strategy with a lawyer first and till then just lay low or maybe the lawyer even told them to not show anything to the public for now for some reason.
ProJared did something similar when his shit hit the fan and released a video only after a while, telling his side of the story, which he definitely prepared/checked with his lawyer.
