Saw there was a thread for Battlebots but that hasn't been touched in a while and there's way more to combat robot fighting than just BB so I'd thought I'd make a general for it.
I grew up with Robot Wars and in the past year or so rekindled that passion to the point where I'm seriously considering taking it up as a hobby. Anyone else here a fan of the sport? Hell, are there any kiwis who take part in contests?
With how far the new season of Battlebots has come, and with people like Ray Billing mentoring kids in the hobby, I’m excited to see where things go in the near future.
It was awesome as a concept when I first watched it as a kid, but as I learned how they were programmed and understood the limitations, my opinion's split between it being heavy metal chess and dumb metagaming bullshit(that's still fun to watch).
They made me think I was going to be watching Gundam/Armored Core for real and suckered me into watching and enjoying two door wedges sumo wrestling.
The Witch Doctor team's currently doing a series for kids as well as people interested in joining the hobby that I found extremely informative. Too bad kit robots are kinda hard to find in the UK atm. I'm also planning to go and watch some events in the future to see what I'm getting myself into. Probably not gonna make a flipper or spinner robot should I decide to take part with a robot built from scratch.
