You know what are just as cool as crows? Hawks.

Definitely one of the most fearless ones when I see them. They always seem like they're not afraid of people.

Also, Buzzards.

Wish I could've gotten pictures, but the lighting was going to shit.

At our zoo today. Enjoying the great outdoors. Goblin was goblining all over a goblin attraction. I had my ass planted on a bench to watch as goblin did things.

And right behind me in a giant aviary, a lovely pair of green imperial pigeons were fucking each other stupid. Needless to say, the zoo doesn't have issues with declining green imperial pigeon populations.

Yesterday a hawk caused an accident by flying too close to a vehicle on the highway, tripping the collision assist on the car, which slammed on the brakes at highway speeds. Another car crashed into the back of it.

Happy New Year bird lovers!!! Remember to note the first bird you see on the 1st. Tradition says that the first bird of the year symbolizes what the new year will bring.
 
Ravens are one of my favourite birds to watch because they're social, cunning and are sometimes quite funny. One will be calling for the other from across a distance and it makes this fantastic hollow echo.
 
Newbie Bird watcher doing a state specific "Big Year" in 2026.

So far my favorite bard I've seen is an American Dipper, though I saw it at the end of 2025 so I have to refind it.

Has anyone seen the documentary listers? It got me into doing a Big Year.

I just finished it!

It seems to have gotten quite popular outside of birding circles, so I'm interested to see how many people it brings into birding and what that will be like. Covid lockdowns also got a lot of people into birding, which is nice. I like that the documentary talked about the distinction between listing/twitching/extreme birding and regular birding, and the differences in motivation. Is it for the love of birds or love of competition? That sort of thing. I recommend the book Birding Without Borders, which is about Noah Strycker and his global Big Year record in 2015 of 6,042 species.

Good luck on your Big Year! Let us know of any exciting finds. American Dippers are such special birds. They just have this magical aura about them. I will never forget hanging upside down over a rock in the middle of a river to get a glimpse at a dipper nest.

Spent 45 minutes with a pair of binocs trying to ID a duck (it was a Common Goldeneye) and I immediately went and bought a bird watching scope.

Saw a Killdeer hanging out with a pair of American PitPit's the Ebird app said they where "rare" in my area so that was really cool.

Saw a Bald Eagle this morning but they are common out here.
