The Ashes is a. cricket series between England and Australia. It started after an Australian team beat England at cricket in 1882. After the match the media decried it as the death of English cricket. As a joke, the wives of the players burnt the bails from the game and put them in an urn as the spirit of English cricket. Since then, that is what has been played for.
