My best guess is extra stress. If I just wanted to help with or make a show and it got picked up by the Undertale/Steven Jewniverse/Tumblr/etc. crowd I would definitely resort to either drugs or lots and lots of sugar, especially since I'm likely bound to a contract whether social or physical to not just stop developing and dealing with the team behind the shitshow.

I hate how utterly plausible this is. A good rule of thumb for understanding 21st century male behaviour is "If they're doing something that seems completely inexplicable, they're most likely getting off to it". It's never led me astray so far.

Bronies were a perfect storm of insanity: You got depressed teenagers and grown men that need something to look forward too because the wars and the economy at the time had everyone down, you got the cute horse designs, as I recall this was during an unbelievable drought in watchable TV shows (or at least cartoons), and you got Lauren Faust who was attached to shows people loved back in the day like Foster's Home and Powerpuff Girls. Also you need to factor in that MLP is the closest thing to a standard "cute girls doing cute things" Moe Anime that we've ever had in the west, and a lot of people apparently didn't realize that those exist (the fact that MLP failed in Japan is proof of that. They already have that niche locked down)
I wonder if it was for better or worse that the characters are horses and not human children. On one hand, more people probably grew out of their attraction to horses compared to moefags, but the ones that didnt....

The thing is this series wasn't building to a "nothing matter everyone fake" ending. You wouldn't have characters having the sit down talky moments about how much things mattered or the implication of there being an escape caine doesn't want them to know about throughout the entire series because he has issues with being alone due to literally being made to create cool ideas for/entertain humans in his game world if it was. This final one just veers out of nowhere into the lap of matpat tier retard shit despite everything that came before.
Ponies because at least most are adults and the best part is that they look and act less like irl equines vs anime kids and irl kids which are closer. It had no reason to be evil; I could see it having a reason to resent Caine as the more dominant personality and seek to undermine him. It was just doing its thing in a more predictable fashion than him.
