From what it seems it's more tied to how the clearly goofy wacky put characters in absurd situations kind of internet cartoon is being glommed onto like many things int he past by super super serious people who want everythign to be gradually overtaken by melodrama or something. So basically the people that latched onto homestuck during act 6 onwards and the people that eat up vivziepop's shows that both started as solid comedy premises and turned into unrelated kinda shitty written melodramas.

Like the digital circus' premise is like "haha what if I have no mouth and I must scream but comedy cartoon" from what I've seen of it. if they wanted something closer to dramatic they could literally go with that original story but no! They gotta have the wacky cartoon characters beign jsut as depressed as the people in the more serious thing!

Honestly, It feels the opposite to me: Jax feels like he's constantly getting the protagonist treatment by getting all the character development and drama and radda radda, meanwhile the only thing that Pomni has been getting is the major screentime (and she really doesn't do a lot with it).
