With the month over halfway through and the year wrapping up, what has been everyone's favorite metal album/ep/song/release of 2025?
Late to the party but Confusion Gate by Yellow Eyes completely blew me away. It's a direct sequel to their previous album Master's Murmur, so listening to that first helps with the enjoyment.

I am still going through the albums released this year. As far as individual songs are concerned, Beast in Black's "Enter the Behelit" is pretty fucking great:

My favorite of 2025 was probably Retromorphosis, which is basically rebranded Spawn Of Possession. Not as good as Incurso, but still very, very good. It's hard to find a DM band that's both heavy and groovy. Also, my all time favorite musician, Erlend Caspersen, is on it. I can watch his playthrough videos on repeat and they still get me, especially since I play a bit of bass.

I think I'm past my Meshuggah phase. I love most of their work and I was lucky enough to see them five times, but the last two albums were a "more of the same" kind of deal. I think they should change their gimmick at least a little bit because it gets old even with the advanced musicianship and memorizing super complex rhythmic patterns.. None of the songs on Immutable or Violent Sleep are half as memorable as most stuff on Chaosphere or DEI.

I didn’t end up listening to much new music in 2025, but the newest Savage Master album was probably my favorite:

Sad news: Michael “M-Bro” Embro, notably of Razor, passed away January 5th due to complications from pneumonia. He was the original drummer for Razor and (of note) played on Armed and Dangerous through Custom Killing.

In my opinion, one of the greatest original speed metal drummers. His influence has crossed over into many genres. This is a personal anecdote, but there was a small hardcore band from Memphis I use to talk with and follow. I liked their sound a lot, although I don’t normally like any “metallic” sounding hardcore bands of their ilk. They told me that they thought most thrash/speed metal bands were “whack” but Razor always had “swag” so they “fucked with ‘em”. That has stuck with me for whatever reason.

Anyways, play it loud:

Somewhat related to Voivod, I have an extra ticket to Hells Heroes this year that I’m looking to sell. My brother originally planned to come with me but can’t make it this year. I could be convinced to knock a couple bucks off the price just to get it off my hands before the festival. If anyone’s interested feel free to DM me.

Nothing from 2025 got me very excited. I bought a thousand old records, as we do.

Good new Krallice EP:

Krallice was the closest thing to a Weakling successor the world got, speaking of hipster USBM, I recently found out the band False exists. These guys were actually really good. Girl on vocals too

And before they formed False, the vocalist and drummer were also part of a proggy BM band (with hardcore influences). This is even more interesting imo
