A lot of my favorites have already been mentioned here: Cannibal Ox, that one good Death Grips song (I've Seen Footage), Wu-Tang, etc.

Haven't looked past page 1, Aesop Rock's probably been mentioned as well, but I have to say he's probably my absolute favorite hip-hop artist out there. Not a huge fan of his production (I liked the production on None Shall Pass more than Skelethon), but the man is a fucking genius with words and abstract concepts in the form of a narrative.

Daylight is one of the most well-known of his works and he mentions it himself in other tracks as the apogee of his craft, saying "he'll never make another Daylight". Something about that track just gets me misty, and that doesn't happen often with music.

Yo I love me some Aesop, but the dude tries so fucking hard at times. We get it, you own a thesaurus.
"Diamond cutter spine. Armadillo armor that bends around the blades. Bugs in the beard. Ebony in the lungpiece. Bricks in the Timbs. Bazooka in the tooth that he's flashing at your friends"

WHAT?

Tries hard to do what? Be impenetrable? I dunno man, it sounds authentic enough coming from him.

You should have picked a better example though, most of the stuff in the quoted post is easy enough to decipher...

1. Diamond cutter spine - he's got a tough backbone, strong enough to cut diamond, he's fucking badass.
2. He's got armadillo armor
3. An unkempt beard with fucking beetles and shit in it, like Hagrid
4. Black-ass lungs from smoking too much of that CHRONIC KNAWMSAYIN
5. Big-ass feet in some Timberlands like bricks
6. Apparently a bazooka-tooth is braces, but I dunno, whatever, even if it's some Dr. Seuss shit with an actual bazooka coming out of his tooth, it's a cool image!

I dunno, I'm a huge mark for Aesop Rock's brand of absurdist lyrics.

Aesop Rock's brand of absurdist lyrics.
This. Exactly this. Absurd-ism for the sake of it. Like he's trying to impress by how whimsical his wordplay is.
Sometimes I can get down with it and other times it just doesn't click and sounds like garbled nonsense.
It's more of the feeling I get from the lyrical scheme and the narrative.
The same reason why I can't read any of Alan Moore's books but I love his comics. Just seems like he's trying too hard.

Eh, different strokes for different folks! Not everything has to be Liquid Swords

We can still be friends

Exactly my dude. And I would put on Aesop long before I put something like Trey Songs or Lil Yachty on. I'm just a sucker for that 90's sound man.
That's why this mixtape is always hitting rotation...

Hey guys, so I'm a fan of all music (except country) but I'm probably most into hip hop. Curious if we have any other hip hop heads here.

So lets do something to kick off the conversation here. Any self respecting hip hop fan has been asked the infamous top 5 question.

So gimme your all time top 5 favorite (we can argue about quality later) MCs and your top 5 MCs in the game right now.

In no particular order I'd say my all time favorites are

- MF Doom
- Andre 3000
- Jadakiss
- Pharoahe Monch
- Kendrick Lamar

Today:

- Kendrick Lamar
- Childish Gambino
- Kanye West
- Chance the Rapper
- J. Cole
Beastie boys

Right now I'm just listening to whatever sounds nice. Doesn't matter who it's from, but my favorite rappers right now are MF DOOM, Kendrick Lamar, Freddie Gibbs, Earl Sweatshirt, Jonwayne, and of course the 2 niggas in my avatar. As for producers, Madlib, Questlove, tomppabeats, J Dilla, Nujabes, Flying Lotus, and Knxwledge. A project from a producer I'm really into right now is Hexual.Sealings.Prt5.5_ from Knxwledge, and one from a rapper is Piñata with my favorite track hands down being the Knicks remix.

Also while some people might make fun of me I do like a couple of Yachty songs. Mainly for their production. Run for it's SM64 sample, and Dipset for the Cowboy Bebop sample. Byou$ is a pretty good producer, whenever I hear his tag "abso-lutely!" from Tim and Eric I know it's gonna be good. Ski Mask The Slump God is pretty good too, he has a pretty good flow, and on top of some pretty goofy samples.

You'll probably recognize this from GTA. GTA cut the final two verses, so it's worth a re-listen:
Nostalgic, Twin Towers, and sampled in vaporwave. Need I say more:
The sharif doesn't like this one, it's a nice fast one by Outkast, so it's obviously good:
Woke AND good, top that:
