I'm old enough to remember the world before Current Year, and I didn't encounter any homosexual or "transgender" kids that I know of when I went to school. Homosexuality was odd and a subject of jokes, but not necessarily outright hate. Like "gay" could mean "lame" (as in "that's gay"). And I didn't even know what "transgender" was before around high school. In the schools I went to, the diversity was like @JackoVerde said: there were a number of kids of different races, like in The Magic School Bus.

Also when I hadn't yet graduated HS, "gay" wasn't considered family friendly, and it was censored from kid-friendly shows on TV.

I remember Bojack Horseman tackling the subject of gays in Hollywood and I'm pretty convinced that it's all white washed. If directors and actors fucking underage girls was common knowledge and ignored, there were probably no shortage of homos that operated publicly.
Likewise, not showing gays was probably not wanting to allow them to put gay kisses in, rather than MUH REPRESENTATION.

Yea there was a time when saying things like "gay" and "retarded" were decent alternatives to the word "lame." But now when you say something is "gay" or "retarded," you're automatically cancelled. We've been living in a culture of fear and sensitivity since almost a decade

When I was a kid, my family refused to watch "That 70's Show" because to them it "looked like dumb trash and a cheap nostalgic grab for a time that didn't deserve nostalgia". I only knew about this because there were a couple prime time shows I'd watch with them and commercials for "The 70's Show" would come on and irritate them.

Seeing that there is now a "That 90's Show", I can only bring myself to say "that's fucking gay" and hope I never hear about it again and the perverted scientoligist people involved with it get their just desserts.

I was also never allowed to watch it as a kid and the only way I was going to watch it as well as other things I was too young to watch was when my parents left for date night or when I have to sneak out during the middle of the night.
 
"Hyde is in prison" or "Hyde is dead" would be the easiest. The nuttiest thing they could do is get Christopher Masterson to play the role of '90s Hyde. It's not like this show hasn't had characters recast before.

I didn’t watch the last season for obvious reasons, so when I saw previews I honestly thought they recasted Eric given the “Eric replacement” looked a lot like him.

That was the original plan. Eric was to come back from Africa "a changed man" with that guy playing him. I guess they realized how stupid that was and made him into a new character, Randy.

My headcanon is hyde isn't mentioned in that 90s show because he signed on to work at outpost 31 in 1982 and was killed in the incident with the thing, so nobody knows what really became of him, and it would explain where all the weed came from at the base. After all he does bear a striking resemblance to windows

That said I doubt they'll say much about where hyde is and definitely won't be implying any kind of jail type situation. It would be way too on the nose for what really happened, they showrunners would want to stay as far away with any association with him as possible considering the circumstances

The only true solution is that he became an 80 Hair metal star and died after too much booze and cocaine.
