story wise most of anime is pretty shit disregarding which years it came out so really not ruined. although aesthetically, modern anime looks far better than it's past counterparts.

Anime has the benefit that so much of it's made that some ends up being pretty good while the majority is forgotten. Same with books and the like really, there's a lot of crap with a few good bits that are filtered by time.

If there is a lot of crap then could one really say anime as a whole is good?

Would that not be the same as proclaiming media as a "cult classic" simply because autists relentlessly instist it is good even if professional reviewers and most others disagree?

Sure they can, as over time the bad is mostly tossed aside and the good remains. Same with literature, any form of video, and most product types.

As for the second bit, no. A cult classic generally refers to a form of media that has a specific appeal to a group of people that isn't necessarily appreciated by the majority. Most media types will have a lot of crap and then a handful of stuff that is good and will survive the test of time, but in addition to that, the pool of crap will have a subsection that appeals to niche audiences as a "cult classic". A great example of a cult classic anime is probably Serial Experiments Lain, it's not exactly a good show and a lot of the predictions attributed to it aren't actually correctly attributed as much of what it covers already existed at the time, and really the show is a disjointed mess. Though what makes it enjoyable for a lot of people is that it's a very strange and experimental show and most people probably remember a handful of weird moments from it but forget most of the other stuff that makes it a mess.

I don't really like the look of modern anime. I prefer the hand drawn look of 80's and 90's anime.
