So like, what's the general consensus? Has the Meat Your Match update pretty much killed TF2 forever at this point?
Maybe, maybe not because it does look like Valve was trying too hard to compete with Overwatch since the release as many TF2 players jumped ship to Overwatch, especially in the competitive scene. I still play TF2 though despite the changes. Also Valve is trying to fix the problems of the update.

Honestly, I don't regret getting this game one bit. I love it so much that there are a lot of different gameplay styles to keep things interesting, and the sheer amount of strategies, modes, maps, weapons and items available!

Now that I've finished fanboying over it, DISCUSS.

Uh...how can you buy a F2P game exactly? It's been free for years - even buying something from the Mann Store serves only to give you access to the larger backpack.

Good question. I was in too much of a rush to remember that detail, I'll re-edit the post. In fact speaking of that, I think it was easily the best decision Valve made for Team Fortress 2. Think about it: one of the most popular games on the internet with a loyal fanbase and loads of MEEMS, how could they not resist? It'd net the game even more publicity.

I haven't played TF2 since 2010(on the PC) and 2014(on Xbox360) if I recall correctly on both counts, but I loved it. I've seen recent YT videos on how much the game has changed so much. If I manage to get a new laptop sometime in the near future, I don't think I'll be prepared for all the changes.

I'll mention there are various game balances that've been added.

I cant, but the optimization for TF2 is wacky and stupid. I have a POWERFUL computer and that thing cant get 60 FPS unless very few people are on the server. Contrary to CSGO, which is smooth to me.
how old is your computer?
my computer is off the shelf, and can run tf2 at over 60 FPS with 32 people on a server

TF2 is like the ol' Ma' and Pa' diner/bakery in your neighborhood.

It's old, how it does it's business is completely outdated and the staff are overworked due to the inefficiency at which they work. The food isn't particularly astounding, but it's comforting and familiar and the fact that it's always there makes it appealing even as years go by. The most appealing thing about this dear ol' building is the history behind it and the fact that, while nothing ever changes, nothing ever changes! It's open for business the same as it's always been, and that feeling of having something to come back to even as an old fart will always be a welcoming one, even if the bar across the street serves the best booze on the planet for dirt cheap.

The long-awaited Pyro update finally came out and it's looking to deliver. I'm glad to still play this game from time to time and am quietly hoping that it's competitive scene picks up, with recent gaming arenas in the US taking interest in sponsored events for the game sparking interest again.

This is the only other acceptable answer.
