Yeah I've noticed that too, I also assume its a combination of most central and south American countries severely restricting or straight up banning abortion (as well as good chunks of the population being conservative catholics that probably wouldn't abort even if it was an option due to believing its wrong) and poverty and lack of access to healthcare being even more of a problem down there. I know the Zika virus also causes microcephaly and anencephaly and has been an issue in central and south america for years.

I know misoprostol is available OTC in mexico and other central/south america countries and that's traditionally been how women there have gotten around abortion restrictions, but that won't do a thing for someone being a hardcore enough catholic they believe yeeting even a fucked up potato fetus is wrong.

Sounds like she got dealt a shitty hand at birth and used it as motivation to help others like her. I was looking at the site for her foundation, it looks like other than helping people get craniofacial surgery they also run camps for kids with craniofacial deformities and do other actually good shit for people. Definitely nothing like potato parents like the Buells that start a "foundation" only to pocket all the money and use it to buy a McMansion or MLM huns wasting money of pyramid schemes they really should be saving to help with their kids medical costs (seriously if that boy can get surgery his mom should at least put the fucking sex toy pyramid scheme money aside for that instead of continuing to waste it on shitty sex toys no one wants).

Yeah, in the first documentary the doctor even admitted it was kind of his fault because before the transplant she had a huge problem gaining any weight. I guess she was kind of like a kid with cystic fibrosis pre-transplant and had to eat a ton of calories just to live, but once the transplant happened her metabolism became a lot closer to a normal kid and her existing diet caused her to gain weight. The documentary showed her parents working with a dietitian and Shiloh herself seemed to prefer working to loose weight to improve her mobility to undergoing leg separation surgery to improve her mobility (which would've had a long, painful recovery time).

Sirenomelia is such a rare condition that I guess medical staff and parents kinda have to make shit up as they go because there's not really any standard practice.

I get this, but in my experience a lot of these special needs parents have an obsession with making sure their potato gains weight so they can look "chunky and healthy". Nutrition = love, and progressing along the growth weight chart may be the only "milestone" these kids will ever be able to hit.

Some parents (not necessarily Isaac's, just in general) will disregard dietician's directions, and add supplements to the tube feeds and run it at a faster rate so the kid will get ~big and strong~. Even though heavier kids are way more difficult to reposition/change/carry... plus most of these kids have reflux issues, so they're prone to vomiting all that extra feed anyway. More suffering.

I wonder if these chunky-obsessed parents do much of the child's personal care, or if it all gets passed off to home care nurses. Like if the nurse ends up being the one to change the poopy diapers / reposition from bed to wheelchair / hoist them into the bath etc.. you as the parent don't have to personally carry out any of the hard labour of caring for a bloated potato, so there's no incentive to restrict its bodyweight. The nurse gets to strain their back instead of you! Meanwhile you can put your feet up, pump that Kate Farms love into the gtube, get your kid chunky for instagram asspats, and face no direct consequences.

Obviously, no child should be underweight, but I think an unexpected effect of the obesity epidemic is that it's very difficult for most laypeople to judge what a healthy weight is based on physical appearance. They make comments about how a child is "skeletal" when photographs reveal that the same child would have been considered normal 30 years ago. People also vastly underestimate their own caloric requirements, as can be observed in basically any thread in the Deathfats subforum. Having to estimate energy requirements for a child who can't express hunger or satiety is tricky as fuck. There's likely an element of wishful thinking, too. If a kid can't move at all, she needs fewer calories but is also "more disabled". Overestimating calorie requirements is kind of a backwards way of overestimating a kid's abilities.

When people like Ansley's mom start trusting their own "research" and the experiences of other "warrior mamas" over actual facts and medical advice, they get on board with stuff like making the kid extra chunky to demonstrate that she's being taken care of.

I can also imagine that having a child who is profoundly intellectually and physically disabled leads parents to search for any way of showing love. If your kid has really limited awareness, she might not be able to respond to your expressions of affection, so gaining weight due to (over)feeding might be the only quasi-reciprocal way you have to express love.

Additionally, some special needs kids legitimately do struggle with gaining weight and keeping it on. I think seeing that in their own kid or on social media might really frighten some of these parents and they overcompensate as a result.

It's sad and complicated. I couldn't believe it when Ansley's mom posted before and after photographs. Yes, she was clearly underweight before getting the trach placed, but I think the pendulum has swung too far the other way.

I'll bet lots of these kids are also on meds that cause bloating and weight gain as well. Steroids and seizure meds have been mentioned, but tons of other meds are notorious for it especially shit like seroquel and other antipsychotics. Lots of kids who are tards but not total potatoes get put on antipsychotics to dope them into behaving (or moreso they're too heavily drugged to misbehave), especially if they have shitty parents that don't want to put in any effort on their end to do anything to improve their kids behavior (like not constantly scream at them).

Yeah that's one thing I realized, I know even normal kids have a shit time if their parents are into MLM because that's where all the money and attention goes. A kid with medical conditions and facial deformities that will need surgery is probably going to have an even worse time with shit like mommy putting off getting his face fixed because she had to buy another package of overpriced sex toys. He won't be able to have friends over because his mom is always doing "passion parties" or whatever the fuck trying to hawk sex toys to confused neighbors. His mom only paying attention to him when she's using him to try and get people on the internet to buy crap from her.

I google imaged and some of these extreme clefts are super gnarly looking, but some of the results of surgery are pretty impressive compared to the before pics. I'd assume a lot of these can have an ok quality of life when they get it fixed.

I first heard of MLM for sex toys in the early 1980s. They were dubbed "Fuckerware."

Again, like most other people who did MLM, the people I knew who got involved in it usually did it for themselves to get the vendor discount.

They offer cutting edge treatments that aren't available to children anywhere else, and the research they do there is incredible. Their webpage has a very robust set of resources on basically anything that could possibly afflict a child, and many of their physicians give at least part of their time free to treating children in the developing world. For anyone curious about some of the conditions talked about here, their webpage is an awesome resource.

Well, update on that little god warrior Silas Earl. Looks like he gets to go home, and of course, everyone is cheering them on about how brave and miraculous he is.

His head seems to be getting even bigger, and looks like they'll need another shunt. Poor kid looks miserable as hell, and there is no light in that kids eyes in my opinion. Truth be told after that infection he got , I'm surprised he made it.

I can imagine this girl being the biggest bitch to nurses, the fact her little angel got any sort of infection and isn't doing as well as she hopes. She's also weirdly obsessed about him trying to suckle breast milk. I didn't put all the posts in here, but still.

Poor kid has the equivalent of no immune system, and his sister is a toddler so I imagine he's gonna pick something nasty up soon enough. I don't think she realizes how absolutely filthy children are, because a toddler is a walking petri dish and with a baby that fragile it's gonna be hard to not introduce something even if you're not going to taking the baby anywhere. God, you could spit on him and he'd wilt.

I couldn't help but notice how she pointed out that the nurses are nothing a trend with the head, but never directly says that the circumference is going up. Poor kid looks rough. Miracle of medical science this kid is, but miracle of God he is not.

He doesn't even look real. Reminds me of that thing where humans are designed to be uneasy around things that look humanish, but aren't quite human enough.

Two things. First, SCID is what David Vetter, the "Bubble Boy" had. Basically, it means that this poor kid has a nonfunctioning immune system. SCID is slightly more survivable now than it was in the days of Bubble Boy, but I believe the primary treatment option is still bone marrow transplant and no ethical doctor is going to do BMT on someone with Silas' other health issues. It is a rigorous and unpleasant treatment, involving very high dose chemo, although it might be slightly less terrible if he truly doesn't have an immune system.

Second, I wonder if they will use this as a reason for their daughter to keep living with her grandparents.

In the United States, euthanasia isn't a thing for anyone. However, if a woman gives birth to a baby who is too preterm or sick to be viable, she's generally offered "comfort care" for the infant. This just means that doctors will provide treatments that limit the baby's discomfort as it dies, but they won't attempt anything that might prolong the inevitable and cause suffering. So, stuff like invasive mechanical ventilation, with a tube down the throat, is not done, but maybe some oxygen blowing on the baby's face might be provided if the baby is gasping or showing signs of "air hunger". They'd give pain meds, but not antibiotics if an infection develops. Once the baby's heart stops, no CPR will be administered and it will be allowed to die naturally. Usually when this is chosen, the hospital goes all out to make the experience whatever the parent wants it to be. Photos might be taken by a professional photographer, the mom might be able to bathe and dress her baby, the baby might be held in the parents' arms for all treatments instead of being moved out of the room, etc.
