It sounds like Charlotte was still able to live longer than kids with her condition typically live, if they usually die in infancy.

Aren't respiratory infections a huge killer of people with mobility and other disabilities?

I knew about Charlotte's story but I didn't know this part, I love it.

Even pre-COVID, adults admitted to hospital with an "influenza-like illness" (so the symptoms of a respiratory tract illness that doesn't appear to be a simple pneumonia) would get a multipanel respiratory virus screen, which includes RSV. From memory it was maybe 10 viruses?

I assume kids are the same, but when kids get croup you can pretty much just assume it's RSV, so they may have done more targeted virus panels.
Ok. I wasn't sure because her parents were convinced it was COVID, but the test was negative, and I didn't see any mention of RSV.

I didn't even know adults could get such a nasty case until I got it last year. I didn't get a fever, though. It was weird.

Was she also tested for RSV? I'm guessing she wasn't, but a particularly nasty case of RSV can cause an opportunistic pneumonia infection, and some of the symptoms are very similar to earlier versions of COVID, such as difficulty swallowing (you might be able to get liquids down, but solids are a choking risk), fever, and constant painful coughing.

Obviously it's too late for this, but some COVID tests are multi-viral detectors, so a test for COVID and RSV can come back abnormal, with a negative test for COVID but a positive test for RSV. I don't know if any of those are available for home testing kits - the one I took that was like this was in the emergency room. The whole thing absolutely sucked, and given RSV tends to be more severe in very young kids, I would imagine it was very painful for her.
I think it's safe to assume she was tested for the usual viral respiratory panel (RSV, adenovirus, human metapneumovirus, parainfluenza virus 1-3, influenza A and B) in addition to COVID. It is also likely that she was tested for non-viral respiratory illnesses, such as whooping cough.

Unfortunately, what @Android raptor said above:
Aren't respiratory infections a huge killer of people with mobility and other disabilities?
is true. In fact, I'd guess that pneumonia is probably among the the most common causes of death in patients with severe neurological disabilities, although I'm not able to provide a citation for that claim at the moment. There are multiple contributing factors involved.

For one thing, it's common for patients with neurological disorders to have hypotonia (low muscle tone). When the muscles of the trunk and abdomen are weak, it's very difficult to cough effectively. If you've ever had major abdominal surgery or even just a bad chest cold for a few days, you know how much muscle involvement it takes to cough deeply. If you can't cough, you can't clear the mucus out of your lungs and bronchi when you get a respiratory illness. That mucus just sits there and bacteria love it. A minor respiratory virus that causes a cold is no big deal for people with an effective cough, but it can easily turn into pneumonia in someone with central hypotonia.

Severe neurological disorders also affect the ability to swallow. This can cause a patient to aspirate, or breathe the contents of the aerodigestive tract into the lungs. This can be saliva or mucus from the mouth, or food during a meal, or stomach contents that are regurgitated because of reflux or vomiting. The foreign matter in the lungs can cause inflammation on its own and it provides the perfect environment for bacteria and fungus to flourish. When this happens, the patient develops aspiration pneumonia, which can kill them. Many people with these types of severe disability have feeding tubes, which reduce the chance of aspirating by bypassing the mouth. It's also common for them to get a Nissen fundoplication, which has been discussed recently. Basically, the procedure involves wrapping part of the stomach around the base of the esophagus. This prevents reflux by making it very difficult for stomach contents to come back up.

It's extremely common for people with severe neurological disorders to aspirate on saliva or vomit during a generalised seizure. Since Charlotte had a documented major seizure before she started getting sick, I'm willing to bet she aspirated. Then, when she was admitted to hospital, she was given a standard respiratory panel, which was negative at the time because she had an aspiration pneumonia rather than a viral illness. However, hospitals are pretty germy places, even with the most stringent precautions in place in early 2020, and patients requiring mechanical ventilation are at an increased risk of contracting a nocosomial (hospital acquired)infection. In Charlotte's case, it's my guess is that she picked up some other kind of respiratory virus, whether COVID or RSV or something else, while hospitalized, which was ultimately fatal. I'd be curious to know whether an autopsy was performed and if viral testing was conducted.

I don't want to sound at all critical of her parents, because losing a child is unimaginable. However, I do think it is probably difficult for them to contemplate that she ultimately died from epilepsy when she's literally the poster child for CBD. That's a pretty cruel twist.

for the drug testing, as with most answers when it comes to pre natel care: it depends.

From what I understand, many factors will determine whether a new mom is drug tested or not. In most cases, if the woman is scheduling regular pre natel appointments, the pregnancy is progressing without conplications, the mothers bloodwork apears normal (no strange liver enzyme elevations indicitive of drug and/or alcohol use), and of course the bebe is delivered without major issues, they typically will not test.
In most states it’s SOP to test all pregnant women, regardless of previous prenatal care but they would have been tested already by their OBGYN if they had regular care.

After the meth and OxyContin (rx pill epidemic) they had a big problem with pregnant women of all backgrounds using drugs, but lying about it, because if you tell a doctor you are using drugs CPS is going to be contacted.

This includes women getting regular, Private insurance care. A drug screen is done on at least one of the endless urine samples pregnant women give at monthly appointments and many insurance companies mandate this because they want to know if they have a high-risk or possible NICU baby issue and try to avoid it.

Upon admitting to a hospital for delivery they immediately run a drug screen via urine sample because they know the chances of a pregnant woman in labor being honest about drug use is very low. Once again if a woman in labor admits to active drug use CPS will be called but the medical team must know if there has been active drug use for the health and safety of the baby and mother.

Most women never even know they had the drug screens run because if it doesn’t come back positive nothing is ever said. The doctors and hospitals never mention they are going to do them unless they are already confronting a woman about possible drug use due to very obvious red flags.

If you have private insurance, and bother to go through your billing for the endless tests done during pregnancy, you will find at least one drug screen done along with the litany of all the other screens done. I know this because a few years ago I got a bit offended when I saw my insurance had been billed $15 for a drug screen by my OBGYN. Did he think I was some druggie!?! But I but found out almost all private insurance mandate one drug screen done during prenatal care. However, I would have never had a clue it had been run on me had I not gone through my insurance billing line by line and recognized the lingo for a standard 5 screen drug panel. Most pregnant women who don’t use drugs never know these tests are run because it’s never mentioned unless you test positive for illicit substances.

I talked to the doctor about it and he said even if he wasn’t required by insurance he would do them anyway, because it’s just not something they can trust to be self-reported and it’s critical they know if any drugs (legal or illegal) are in a pregnant woman’s system.

This is why there is a weird niche of home birth people who want to have a non-medicalized homebirth because they are using drugs - whether it’s just weed or harder stuff. Idk if it’s still the case, but even weed would be reported to CPS and could result In inquiries.

It is more invasive when the woman is on Medicaid for her healthcare because they have a lot more mandated testing and interventions than women using private insurance. If you are poor enough to qualify for Medicaid you are already in a higher-risk group for drug use and other issues they monitor. This is generally the population the drug-using home birth er niche springs from. They know the only medical coverage they can get is via Medicaid and they know their drug use and other issues will be closely monitored by Medicaid funded care providers because it’s part of the requirements for all pregnant women covered by Medicaid. They want to avoid detection of their drug use and CPS/ social worker looking into their living conditions and think opting out of the system all together by going the home birth route is the best solution. (This obviously isn’t the majority of home birthers, who tend to be obsessive purists with what they put into their bodies, but they do make up a significant but small minority. They are like the grungy dirt bags of the home birth population.)

This is what is called a perverse incentive. The practice of involving the government in this is worse than doing nothing, and way worse than allowing medical doctors to handle medical matters.

This just made me a bit MATI. It is not ablism for a child to be "normal" I don't get parents who WANT their children to remain unable to communicate or do things. This child was in therapy to walk and she WAS walking small steps the parent pulled her out because GASP it will make her normal. The speech therapy was helping her learn words, but the mother stopped that too.

Here is the post about the disorder she has.
So to her, "a normal life" doesn't look like walking or communication or not shitting in a diaper. That's really great. How enormously CONVENIENT for her that she can do all those things, anyway.

What does "a normal life" look like to her daughter? Has she asked? Oh wait, no she hasn't because the child has no way to communicate her needs.

Check your goddamn privilege, lady.

"A normal life looks like community."

Translation: I want to be praised and asspatted and given free stuff, and how does a walking talking child help with those goals?

Paisley's mother has been going through different ways to shill in her daughters name. Custom creations, photography and now a clothing line which is a rebrand of the photography account.

Pimpin her daughter even in death. There's no reason she can't go back to work but keeping Paisley's memory alive seems a lot easier and more lucrative. The woman has no shame and then bitches about "haters" going after her.

Everyone needs a little Paisley? Um, no. It's every parent's worst nightmare to end up with a child like Paisley. Unable to breathe on her own, move her limbs, speak or even sit up.
When she first started posting on her new Instagram, it was Florida vacations, weight loss, pictures of her husband. She'd mention her daughter, which is understandable, but it seemed like her life was finally heading in the right direction. But no. Back to potato worship and exploiting her daughter's memory for a money. She's no better than Robyn (Luna's mom). What's especially sad is that there are people out there who will actually buy this shit and help her perpetuate this hustle.
