The messed up thing is the foster/adoptive parents who collect special needs kids for the paychecks while unable to actually give the kids the care they need. We are in the process of adopting our daughter who is 14 with severe autism and because she’s our only she’s getting all the services and therapies she needs and is actually cared for by her dad and I. I don’t know how CPS even is okay with parents having more then two moderate-severe special needs in the first place. It’s has to be oblivious to them the parents are only in it for the money and can’t give the kids what they need.

Thank you for being a good parent! It's terribly unfair to take on multiple kids when you have kids with special needs. Your daughter will flourish with therapy and personal attention from loving parents.

I honestly think about this often when I come across social media accounts featuring families that have collected adopted multiple special needs children. Before the mid-2000s, many countries allowed foreigners to adopt as many children, especially special needs children, as they wanted, and people took advantage. Many countries that were formerly alluring for American prospective families, including Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Guatemala, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Vietnam, and China, have enacted extremely stringent laws which make international adoption extremely difficult or impossible altogether, following allegations of rampant corruption, coercion of birth parents, trafficking of children, and multiple high-profile cases of abuse or fatalities involving children adopted from abroad.

Anyway, a lot of the families who pursued international adoption framed it as "saving" a child from a life in an institution. I always wondered how much better it was for the kids who ended up in huge families, removed from their country, culture, and language.

I know way too many families that have done such. Some were international adoptions in exactly the manner you stated, and others were domestic adoptions from foster care. And in all honesty I know of only one of those families that actually treated and cared for the kids in a healthy and positive way. Not treating them different then biological kids and getting them what they need. Although they aren't able to access all of the same therapies and services that someone with only one child could.
Eventually I may decide to add one additional child to our family, also with special needs, but what people don't realize is that with severe autism and trauma a child often needs two OT sessions, two SLP sessions, possibly PT, family therapies, ABA, school, and a social life (albeit adaptative activities) to reach their full potential and anyone that thinks they can manage that for 4+ kids is delusional.

If anyone wants to be outraged and heartbroken, I recommend the book The Child Catchers: Rescue, Trafficking, and the New Gospel of Adoption, by Kathryn Joyce. It's...eye-opening, to say the least.

The same author has another book about Evangelical/fundamentalist Christianity in the United States, which is also fantastic. It's called Quiverfull: Inside the Christian Patriarchy Movement.

I think many posters here would be interested in both titles.

I came here to say this but my favorite ursine delicacy beat me to it. Truly, the undisguised arrogance on display here is stupefying.

I'm so glad that all of the doctors concurred with the diagnosis. Sometimes, even the smartest physicians miss nuances like "seizure bad", so THANK GOD Paisley's mother was there to set them straight.

Not to defend Gwen, but didn't they not realize the condition was even genetic til Lola ended up with it? I know she still chose to continue the pregnancy despite prenatal diagnosis of the same issues, but aren't most cases of microcephaly/etc just spontaneous and not genetic?
