Interestingly there's already a snark sub and a quick peep at the top posts the prevailing opinion of the top minds over there seems to be that she's the predator who has snagged a poor innocent young junkie.

She's like the polar opposite of that woman who got bullied on insta because she thought people should not have disabled babies, even though she had severe MD and a right, in my view to have an opinion on the issue. I can't remember now if she had an opinion on disabled women specifically having babies but I think she'd be very against it if there was a chance of genetic transmission.
I hope the pregnant girl can get all the specialized prenatal care coverage that she'll need. Pretty crazy that people with SMA can even get pregnant nowadays. It's not going to be fun to have a parent with such a severe physical disability. And it's degenerative, so good luck counting on your parent being there for you for a long time. Being an unpaid caregiver for parents or siblings is traumatizing for youth.
I have to say the MD girl writes so much more intelligently than the SMA girl. I think she's above average intelligence. I don't think SMA girl is retarded or anything but it's very possible she has some kind of learning disability that doesn't affect her global intellectual development. Or it may come down to being sheltered as others have said. You can't even blame the parents when they were surely told she was screwed at birth.

I really am sorry about her condition but my sympathy stops there. Her older parents are going to end up raising this kid IF it survives. The Mother is going to be confined to her wheelchair and there's no way the sperm donor sticks around after the novelty wears thin and money dries up.

Waiting for the day someone rounds up all the info about her and dumps it into PG... here's some info about the allegations against her that she's a rape apologist (credit to this reddit post) and another allegation that she's racist when she came out with this blogpost. And don't even get me started on the boyfriend... having a newborn and a disabled girlfriend to take care of on top of dealing with BPD is enough to make anyone relapse, especially someone who isn't even a year into sobriety...

The idea of a already disabled and medically fragile person refusing prenatal care is… scary. Non-disabled is scary. Disabled and refusing is a different sort of scary. So much can go wrong. I hope her parents can talk sense into her but.. slim. The baby having issues during birth or in pregnancy is one thing. Yet herself? Is another. She would have to be a c section most likely? The comment on this screenshot was written by a woman who is a high quad (C1 or C2 level) as the result of a botched forceps delivery. She says that the obstetrician who delivered her had been drinking and internally decapitated her while trying to pull her out of the birth canal with the forceps, which I quite honestly believe is exactly what happened. She's ventilator dependent and uses a power wheelchair, but she and her husband had their first child together a year or so ago. People gave her incredible amounts of hate for choosing to get pregnant, but she's exactly who I was thinking about when I said that I don't care what women do with their bodies. She's able to care for her child, and that's all that should matter. Concern trolls kept asking her how she would care for the child if something happened to her husband, but to me, that's one of those things that any of us might have to deal with.

She seemed pretty normal, but it's really giving me pause to see her licking the assholes of this couple. I guess it's gotta be difficult to call out a fellow member of such a tight-knit community.

In a similar vein I was surprised to see Chelsie Hill of the Rolettes who's also pregnant and I think is the "inspiration" for this interacting and supporting these two. It must be the same kind of thing. If she calls it out she's afraid she's going to be torn down publically for ableism and be criticised herself for having a baby when disabled (although Chelsea has full use of her upper body so has far fewer challenges to motherhood)

Anyway I've made a thread in PG to stop this one getting Battersbee'd again. OP is getting there so any more discussion of this one we had better take it there. I have a strong suspicion there will be a redditor pile on now she's posted an ultrasound confirming the pregnancy.

OK tard farmers here's a moral medical conundrum for you all. A sort of reverse tard-baby.
Wheelchair rapunzel. An insta famous young woman with Spinal muscular atrophy. She is 100% reliant on carers (her parents) for all her daily needs and she's pregnant. OK. She's pregnant with her supportive husband after years of genetic counselling?

Nope. She's pregnant by her new boyfriend. Less than a year out of opioid addiction he has raging borderline PD. She cant/hasn't seen a medical professional about this because seemingly her insurance has no provision for such an eventuality, and just assumes she will be fine to carry to term. She thinks she's about 14 weeks based on LMP.

Not sure if SMA is hereditary in the sense that you're born with it encoded in your genes or the sense that you pass it down directly as obviously the parents dont have it or like...your mum had an uncle with SMA and now you have it. Paging @Thomas Eugene Paris if anybody here knows its you.
Nobody has really lived to pass it down historically. Are there actually previous cases of someone with SMA delivering successfully or fathering a child I wonder? Will have to do some actual research research not just reddit scraping.

There is an IG'er I follow who has 2 kids who has SMA. One is normal, one has cerebral palsy.

If by SMA you're referring to Spinal Muscular Atrophy, there are many different types, and the milder ones have near-normal life expectancies. Some may be from spontaneous mutations, and others may be from recessive genes.

This sounds like a case of two people whose only common ground was that nobody else wanted to go near them, due to their personalities and not their disabilities.

If by SMA you're referring to Spinal Muscular Atrophy, there are many different types, and the milder ones have near-normal life expectancies. Some may be from spontaneous mutations, and others may be from recessive genes.

The vast majority of gene mutations causing spinal muscular atrophy are inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. This doesn't mean that people with SMA have been having children, though.

For anyone who has more important things to remember than high school biology, autosomal recessive inheritance means a person must get two mutated copies of a gene, one from each parent. The parents each have one normal copy and one mutated copy, so they do not have symptoms. Every time the parents reproduce, their offspring has a 25% chance of having the disease or trait (inheriting two mutant copies of the gene), a 25% chance of not having the disease or being a "carrier" of the mutation (inheriting two normal copies of the gene), and a 50% chance of being a carrier (inheriting one mutated copy and one normal copy of the gene). Usually, someone who is a carrier for a recessive trait doesn't have symptoms, but they can pass the mutation to their children. If they produce offspring with someone who also has one mutated copy of that gene, their children can inherit the illness. In some cases, such as the more common mutations resulting in cystic fibrosis, this is important because the carrier rate among the general population is very high. In other instances, when the disease is very rare, a carrier is incredibly unlikely to encounter and reproduce with someone else with the same disease-causing mutation. This was the case for Cal Hartley, brother of the infamous Hartley Hooligans. Both of his parents happen to carry an extremely rare mutation in a gene called ASNS, which encodes a protein called asparagine synthetase. Claire and Lola had the misfortune to inherit a mutant copy of ASNS from their mother and another from their father. Obviously, Cal has at least one normal copy of the ASNS gene, but when it was discovered that Gwen and Scott were both carriers of an ultra-rare mutation Cal was tested to see if he was a carrier, too. Gwen had the decency to not disclose the result of that testing, but because the mutation is so incredibly rare in the first place, it's very unlikely that Cal will reproduce with another carrier, so whether his carrier status truly matters is a philosophical question, at best. Of course, ultra-rare doesn't mean impossible; after all, Scott and Gwen both found someone with an ASNS mutation and procreated not once but thrice, and considering the winning personalities and good looks of those two, that's a miracle in itself.

So, asymptomatic carriers mean that there are people out there who can pass SMA or another inherited disease on to their offspring without having it themselves. Sometimes a new mutation just arises spontaneously in a person at the time of conception. This is called de novo mutation, and it's critical from an evolutionary standpoint, creating more genetic variability with the species. Most of us have at least one weird but harmless heterozygous mutation that we'll never know about, but sometimes you lose the de novo lottery and end up a carrier for something really bad, like spinal muscular atrophy, cystic fibrosis, or asparagine synthetase deficiency.

In closing, I'll say that all of what I've written is why most genetic disorders are inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion. Asymptomatic carriers almost always live normal lives, surviving long enough to reproduce, and 75% of the offspring they produce with another asymptomatic carrier will be healthy. In autosomal dominant inheritance, on the other hand, one mutated copy of the gene is sufficient to cause illness. This means that there are no "asymptomatic carriers" and in many cases, affected probands don't survive long enough to reproduce. Nature wants us to fuck and have healthy babby, so this is a way for unfit specimens to be weeded out. Evolution is like, "Hey, some variability would be good around here!" Spruce the place up a bit", sees autosomal dominant conditions, and goes, "BUT NOT LIKE THAT!"
