Sad thing is in the case of Tinslee it actually went to court and there are quotes from the nurses on just what her life is in the lawsuit:
"Tinslee was born premature and suffers from a host of medical conditions including a rare heart defect (known as Ebstein's anomaly), pulmonary atresia, chronic lung disease, severe chronic pulmonary hypertension, and acute systolic heart failure among others.
She is on a tremendous amount of pharmaceutical drugs designed to keep her alive. She can only breathe with full mechanical ventilator support. Even with that support, Tinslee can only stay alive if she stays still and calm. Actions such as crying, fussing, holding her breath, or even just stress causes her to utilize oxygen much faster than she can replenish it. As a result, Tinslee must spend her days sedated, paralyzed, and sometimes restrained.
Tinslee has required artificial life support for most of her life, and has continuously been on life support since July. She is in pain. Moreover, as the evidence will show, almost every bit of medical and personal care that Tinslee receives causes her to suffer. At least 2-3 times per day, Tinslee has a "dying event," that mandates aggressive medical intervention. Events that cause Tinslee to crash include such routine things such as baths, diaper changes, positional shifts ( to prevent bedsores), or nothing at all. As the Court will hear, the standard of medical care for Tins lee is to cease treatment. Indeed, to continue treatment for Tinslee mandates that doctors violate the most sacred oath of their profession: primum non nocere ("first, do no harm").
"Cook Children's has been in constant communication with Tinslee's mother, Plaintiff herein, and has informed her of their physicians' conclusion that continuing to intervene medically is inflicting pain on Tinslee without any corresponding therapeutic benefit. Plaintiff has stated that she disagrees and believes that Tinslee is not in pain and will somehow recover. "
"Even a diaper change or crying too much can cause Tinslee’s oxygen levels to crash, requiring several nurses to disconnect her from the ventilator and manually inflate her lungs. "
"There is no medical benefit to continuing life-sustaining treatment for Tinslee and, as the evidence will show, such treatment causes her pain that she is forced to endure for no reason. Under all ethical medical standards, it is time to focus on controlling her pain rather than cruelly extending her life."
No hospital will take transfer of the child because they know its a moot point to sustain her life for her to be in agony. The courts have required Cook's Children to continue to care due to a anti-abortion group joining with the mother.
In January they pretty much gag ordered the hospital so that they could not speak the truth about the child and all info from then on had to come form court documents:
"Fort Worth, Texas (January 4, 2020)–The family of Tinslee Lewis has revoked their decision to allow Cook Children’s Medical Center to speak about the health or medical status of Tinslee Lewis. As with any of our patients, we obtain consent beforespeaking about a medical condition in accordance with HIPAA laws. With the permission withdrawn, we will respect the Lewis family’s decision"
As of October the supreme court of texas has declined to review the case so the hospital is still being forced to keep this child alive.
This site has every press release and legal document regarding this case its a very interesting and sad read:
