I don’t know shit about China but in the US, domestic adoption through an agency is still super expensive. Adopting through foster care obviously doesn’t have that huge price tag, but the point of foster care is to get kids back to their bio family if possible so there’s a good chance a kid you’re fostering will be returned to their parents after a while. Kids who are wards of the state already tend to be older...can’t get a cute toddler that way!

tbh I’m surprised China still lets Americans adopt Chinese kids, I thought they stopped doing that.

I hope the adopted albino girls are able to develop their own styles and identity apart from their shitty mom. I hate how people treat girls especially as dolls instead of people. With the holoprosencephaly kid, isnt that a condition that varies in severity from disabled but aware to horrific cyclops that dies after birth? I guess whether he's aware of shit depends on how severe his condition is

Yeah, there are several versions of holoprosencephaly...Alobar, Semi-Lobar and Lobar. There's a fourth condition that's grouped among the holoprosencephaly syndromes, but it's different enough that it's thought by many scientists to actually be a separate condition. Among the three above, Alobar is the worst...That's the one where the babies look like cyclops and the forebrain doesn't split at all. Most all of those babies are either miscarried or die soon after birth. The least serious version is lobar, where there the brain does split into hemispheres, but they aren't quite complete. The child might look almost normal in this case. And then in between the two, you have semi-lobar. Even though alobar is the most serious in the sense that that is incompatible with life and causes the most extreme deformities, in some ways semi-lobar can be thought of as worse because with alobar, the kid is not suffering and while the parents might suffer emotionally because of the loss of a child and the gut punch that comes with the shock of giving birth to something so ghastly, they are free to have other, hopefully healthy children.
With semi lobar holoprosencephaly, you've got a child that thanks to the "miracles" of modern science can live for years, but will need constant, round the clock care. They wont be as deformed as the cyclops babies, but their appearance is still fucked. Cognitively, they're maybe a little bit above a total vegetable...maybe. They will have intractable seizures and will be able to do nothing for themselves. They'll never walk talk, feed themselves or use the toilet by themselves. This is the condition that the kid in the previous post has. He looks like he could be a sibling of Matthew Nel, who also has the condition and has been mentioned in this thread before. Mathew's parent's keep a blog about him, although they haven't posted much in the past year.

There haven't been any announcements about his death, so he is probably still hanging on, or rather being forced to remain alive despite his best efforts to die. It's very common for parents of a child like this to give the child comfort care only, and use hospice. It's every bit as heartbreaking as it sounds.

Just be glad that the cyclops babies don't live long enough to be paraded around in strollers while their crazy parents gush about how much they love coloring and watching Spongebob.

There was an article, maybe linked in this thread??, from a doctor writing about his first year of practice at a hospital in the late 1950’s. He described a cyclops baby being born at the Catholic hospital he worked at and it lived a few days.

They basically just left it in a bassinet to die and even the nuns had difficulty tending to it and in fact did not. The deformities it was born with left it unable to nurse/feed and there certainly wasn’t the technology to try rectify that issue. It was basically left to die of dehydration.

The fact with absolutely no aid was given and it lived a few days is remarkable. Makes me think with today’s technology it might have lived weeks or months. But it’s rare for such babies to survive birth or even live beyond a few hours after birth.

As awful as the idea of a newborn slowing dying of dehydration is, unnaturally extending their life is far more cruel.

I hate it too. Girls are made to feel like dolls and the idea that physical presentation is their most important attribute they possess is reinforced. It’s a sure recipe for unhappiness and disaster even if they happen to be exceptionally beautiful.

The albino Chinese children will not be cute moppets as adults. The boy particularly will suffer. Regardless of what their mother spews she has reinforced the idea to the albino kids that their value comes from their unique physical appearance- it will make them miserable as teens and adults.

I don't think any of them were able to actually breathe, and if they were somehow vented to extend life for a few hours, honestly where the fuck would you put the tube? Yeah as butthurt as it makes certain prolifers, the term "incompatible with life" exists for a reason. Some conditions result in something that's so massively fucked up that at best it will just kind of exist for a short while after birth before dying. Cyclops babies, anencephaly, those are incompatible with life. Fundies can get mad at doctors all the want but those are facts.

On a related note, I don't think i ever posted this but a while back Sarah mentioned two other moms she knows who will be carrying inside-out babies to term. The group she mentions might be an interesting source of material for this thread (like the anencephaly groups where people do photoshoots with dead brainless babies and shit).
