In my opinion it's not a matter of "why would you abort", it's a question of why would you choose to conceive from the beginning if you know that your child will have lifelong hardships due to their health.

Sometimes, conceiving is not a choice. Birth control sometimes fails. You're told that you're infertile when you are fertile. Things often happen that are beyond our control. We don't know that she got pregnant on purpose. Her defiant attitude could be because Drs suggested she abort.

I'm not speaking about this individual specifically but rather generally when it comes to those who well know that their kids will have the same disease or condition and still makes an active choice.
I've seen people go through ivf just because they are so desperate to conceive a biological child although they are sick, and that's plain egotistical in my opinion.

Some people with genetic disorders, or who are carriers for genetic disorders, use IVF to select an embryo that doesn’t have the disorder.

There is quite a difference between finding out that you are pregnant and making the choice to keep it and a person who actively makes the choice to get pregnant even though they know what the consequences might be.

Like those parents having two kids with cystic fibrosis even though they knew the second kid was likely to have it too.
Or like Luna's mother being hell bent on having a home birth even though Luna's condition is a result of a birth injury.
The ones who put their own needs first and the childs second.

Too many people wants to become parents for all the wrong reasons.

The real fun cases are where everyone is disabled. I was a teenage volunteer counselor to a summer day program for retarded teens and young adults. Mostly you had a display of recessive genes and chromosomal mishaps, except for one guy. Unsurprisingly, tard+tard=tard and it was both comical and frustrating, especially since they didn't have any caretakers, at least full time anyways. Which is why the guy went to the program in dirty clothes and smelled, because mom went around in dirty clothes and smelled, because she didn't understand why staff (or anyone else) had a problem with that. If anything has changed, it's only because they have full time caretakers that won't tolerate that shit.

I do wonder though if the guy went on to produce the third generation tard. Or hell, if he did have a kid with another retarded woman, only the baby awkwardly wound up with recessive normal genes. That'd be interesting (and awkward).

Anyway, she said that about half of the clients' parents had some kind of mental disability, usually schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and/or mental retardation, and those children usually went to live with a relative who had been fighting for custody since before the child was born. As one might expect, most of the others involved parents with substance abuse issues.

The one thing she and her colleagues could never get over was how much those little kids almost always knew about pornography, drug paraphernalia, and sex toys.

On that thought, though, what percentage of the most desperately poor in a developed country (those living entirely off benefits, say) are learning disabled or mildly cognitively challenged? I always see people saying things like ‘well after the factories closed down and everyone became poorer the kids got out of control’ but it’s not like the town’s genetics changed.

Saw this. First, shit looks like raw chicken. Second, are extreme premies like that surviving and not having any issues really that common? Because I swear i heard that while occasionally they survive and don't end up having any issues, most end up having various disabilities and ongoing issues.

I had to look up how long 23 weeks is. For sure they can thrive better than 30 some odd years ago. I was three months premature. I definitely have vision loss because of an oversight with oxygen, but that's the only telling factor, and even then, no one's going to guess it happened in the NICU.

Buck vs Bell is probably to thank for things like this. Though it involved a midly challenged person being sterilized for some reason this is generalized to it being wrong for all disabilities. Forced sterilization of course is an extreme, but it is stupid that you cannot simply get birth control easily for them.

Here's a good thing to do during a pandemic: take your medically sensitive child to a major tourist attraction, and while you're at it, don't wear masks. Look on the bright side: Luna's eyes are open, so it means that she's having a great time! Can't you see the pure joy on her face? Plus, her doomed little brother got a cute souvenir out of it, which Luna most definitely picked out all by herself! Hopefully he'll live long enough to enjoy playing with it. It's also nice to see Glenn making an appearance. It must have been difficult to fit him in the frame alongside Robyn's massive ego.

Oh wait, there's the mask. Being worn improperly. Luna's eyes are extra open here, and her mouth is gaping open even more than usual, so it's clear she's having an even greater time. Or maybe she's just freaked out by the jaguars, whom she can totally see. If she even knows what the fuck a jaguar is.

And hey! Here's Luna totally kicking butt in physical therapy! Perhaps her neck is getting a little stronger so that maybe someday she'll be able to sit up by herself. Or perhaps she's being supported by the therapist. At any rate, she almost blinked this time. And guys, can't you see her mouth moving out of sheer excitement at the toy she most likely can't see or hear? It's totally not spontaneous lip smacking that brain damaged people do all the time. Can't you feel the curiosity! God bless her!
