This is a discussion regarding Tangerine Dream often regarded as one of the best electronic music artists in the 1970s.
Tangerine Dream performing one of the best songs at the cathedral.

Top tier act. Hard to pick a favorite, but I really really enjoy the Logos live recording a lot.

Their score for Thief is really good. Interestingly enough they also did the original soundtrack that plays in GTAV during missions oddly enough

https://youtube.com/watch?v=doW4s-1ULOcTheir soundtrack for Miracle Mile is great.
So is their soundtrack for Sorcerer (1977) which is also an excellent movie.

Another one of my favorites is when they were at London Hall in 1976 as it is a very unique and dark composition.

I also think that 1980's-era Tangerine Dream is very underrated when they started delving into New Wave as a lot of their material from then sounds like something from a very moody science fiction movie or 1980's anime like Akira, even if the fanbases of anime have now been pozzed by troons.

1. Tangerine Dream - Mojave Plan

The second part of this sounds like you are on a futuristic high-speed train through a desert.

2. Tangerine Dream - Digital Times

This feels both futuristic and "nostalgic". It is hard to explain, I guess.

3. Tangerine Dream - Thermal Inversion

Very "New Wavey" and cool.

4. Tangerine Dream - Force Majeure

This particular section sounds like the ending of an epic film.

I love "Go To The Head Of The Class" from 3' O Clock High.

Consistent good work on the Babylon 5 soundtrack too. Somewhere I have a signed poster of Franke in front of his modular rack.

My favorite TD is when Johannes Schmoelling is in the band (Tangram, Hyperborea, Le Parc, and especially the live set Poland). I have a few solo discs by Schmoelling yet they leave me cold. Paul Haslinger's solo works are very wacky world music, often in a good way. Tyger is outside the Schmoelling era but I think it is top-drawer material.

Recently I got a bunch of Membran re-releases for dirt cheap. I used not to think much about Jerome Froese, but at least on What A Blast Jerome's contributions are considerably better than Edgar's.

A few years ago I listened to basically every one of their studio albums over the course of that summer. Some standouts from ones you don't normally see posted I'll link below:

Bent Cold Sidewalk from the album Cyclone

Midnight in Tula from the album White Eagle

Comets Figure Head from the album Mars Polaris

Purple Diluvial from Purple Diluvial

Honestly there's a lot of gems throughout their catalogue but there's sadly a lot of samey slop, especially during their 90's output. There are some okay things from that period but a lot of it is pretty bad. The 2000's stuff is a step up and is worth going through, as well as the 70's/80's heyday with all their soundtrack work of course. Surprisingly they still tour and release stuff after the passing of Edgar Froese, the last original member, and the last album, Raum, was exceptionally good and stands up there with some of their best stuff.

FUCK--I love me some Tangerine Dream!! Listened to a fuckton of it through high school in the early 1990's:

Too Hot for my Chinchilla
The Rockoon album

I have the Island of the Fey on my iTunes...

Question: WHY CAN'T WE STILL HAVE THE TANGERINE DREAM LEGEND SOUNDTRACK??

Yes, I'm shouting. I'm screaming! Why is this no longer available for sale/purchase new? We literally have to go to ebay or Amazon for an antique roadshow priced used CD!!

Other Picks:

The soundtrack from The Keep and Wavelength.

Última edición:

Yes. I loved their album New Age of Earth.

Unpopular opinion, I don't like Phaedra and Rubycon despite fans claiming it's their best albums. I prefer White Eagle, Underwater Sunlight and Silver Siren Collection.

Some picks:

Stoneyard

Dolphin Dance

Their 1975 Live Album Ricochet is the best album I ever heard in my opinion.

Stratosfear will always be my favorite Tangerine Dream record.
Yes. I loved their album New Age of Earth.
Technically that is Ashra since IIRC they had slightly different membership and used a different name on that album. That one is nostalgic as hell to me since I listened to it all the time in high school.

I was always told to avoid it because it was bad. Or is it like the really hardcore prog rock fans who say everything after 1975 is bad and all the neo-prog bands like Marillion who updated 70s prog to an 80s sort of sound were bad?

It is not "bad" just different. I think the real cut-off is the material after 1989's Lily On the Beach, as Optical Race and onward is when Tangerine Dream started becoming new age jazz.
