I don't think they were. Lundy Bancroft, the guy who wrote "Why Does He Do That?", works with wifebeaters and abusers, and he says loads of them claim they were abused in childhood. But he challenges them on it: if they know how bad it feels, why do it to someone else?
That's when they usually recant and admit they were lying to get sympathy, and when the sympathy isn't forthcoming, they admit it. Remember paedos learn to manipulate people, not just the children they abuse, they groom everyone around them.

Also the use of "minor-attracted persons" has no scientific meaning whatsoever, it is specifically a legal meaning, and means the age of consent for a jurisdiction. In other words, he limits his advocacy to the literally criminal pursuit of children it is illegal to have sex with.

I have had dealings with the charity sector in the UK, which is is desperate need of a rethink, though politically you would be mad to kick that hornets nest.

These are my observations:

1. There is a high rate of observable narcissism and sociopathy among charity CEOs. It makes sense when you consider that rank and file charity workers are generally caring and somewhat selfless individuals, and are therefore easily exploited. Oversight in small/medium-sized charities is minimal and advisory boards, that have no direct insight into the running of an organisation, can be misled, manipulated, or may even be complicit in wrongdoing.

2. A common trap that charities fall into is losing sight of their cause and focusing more on their own survival. I once saw a charity break a law that they had vociferously campaigned for, weeks after it came into effect, in order to gain an advantage over a rival charity that was operating in the same sector.

To Mermaids' dubious credit they have never lost sight of their commitment towards enabling the reckless mutilation of vulnerable teenagers.

3. The Charity Commission isn't entirely toothless but they are prepared to turn a blind eye. I have seen a CEO who was on the receiving end of serious allegations, that were backed-up by evidence and multiple testimonies, resign from their role and then take up an identical position with another charity in another town. Classic psychopath behaviour, enabled by a regulatory system that is unfit for purpose.

I will add that there are some really good charities that punch above their weight and that have a meaningful positive impact upon the lives of those who they have pledged to support.

Some of the now-offensive words seem to have been replaced for the sake of replacing them (as a shibboleth more than the old term actually being offensive), especially the racial ones, so I'm not sure if they're really examples of the euphemism treadmill. Especially in the case of "negro", "black", and "colored" where it has been anything but linear with these terms falling in and out and then back into acceptance, rarely with any clear reason for one being considered than the other.

The National Lottery has paused a £500,000 grant to Mermaids, a charity that helps young people who identify as transgender.

Mermaids is being investigated by the Charity Commission for handing out potentially harmful breast binders to girls as young as 13 behind their parents’ backs.

It has also been revealed that Jacob Breslow, one of its trustees, was linked to an organisation that aims to help paedophiles “live in truth and dignity”. Breslow quit his role this week after it emerged that he had given a presentation at an event for B4U-ACT, an American group that promotes services “for self-identified individuals . . . who are sexually attracted to children”.



Mermaids has denied allegations of safeguarding failures and said that it is the victim of a “smear campaign”.


The National Lottery Community Fund confirmed that it had halted all payments to Mermaids during the investigation. It has awarded four grants, worth a combined total of £530,000, to Mermaids, which is based in Leeds. The opening of a compliance case is not a finding of wrongdoing but the first step the watchdog can take in examining potential wrongdoing. It has the power to open a more serious statutory case.

When the National Lottery said in December 2018 that it would give Mermaids half a million pounds over five years, campaigners claimed that Mermaids was irresponsibly promoting medical transition to vulnerable children as a solution to their problems.
Mermaids denied the claims. It maintains that it does not promote any particular pathway over another for children who question their identity. The Lottery Community fund said in a report in February 2019 that it “did not find grounds to withhold funding from Mermaids UK”.
“Given the historic lack of funding and the estimated size of the trans- community this is an important area to fund,” the report concluded.
The Bayswater Support Group of 500 parents that advocates evidence-based care welcomed the decision to pause the payments.
