Mew2King released a video a few days back analyzing Sephiroth's abilities from the trailer, and the tl;dr of it is that Sephiroth's range is basically as huge and OP as everyone thought it would be.

Range didn’t save Min-Min, being fast is better than reach. I think he’ll be just good.

Agree. But a lot depends on his recovery and that wall cling.
All bets are off if he sprouts a wing at high damage.

He's been shown to be able to use his sword for both.
He's got amazing range, recovery, and wall cling from the looks of it. I think the deciding factor will be how fast he is.

Early analysis put him around 14 to 25 frames (accounting for the 30fps trailer) for a lot of moves. Like Booty Judge said earlier, he will likely just be good but not great.

Sephiroth apparently gets an extra jump, and stat boost when his damage percentage gets high.

also i stopped paying attention towards the end, did Sakurai say you can unlock Sephiroth early if you beat the Very Hard boss fight, or just his stage early?

Okay, so...
Pros:
Pros:
- Utterly phenomenal recovery
- Amazing range that can pierce through platforms and stage edges
- Gains an extra mini-jump and boosted stats when he takes enough damage
- Has a projectile that he can cancel out of, (I think), and can provide cover for grabbing and further attacks
- Final Smash gives opponents status conditions like reversed controls, and flower when it hits
- Decently powerful attacks
- Incredible wall grab
- Has a projectile weapon that can also double as a throwable item
- Shield can block strong attacks, but can't reflect them
- Seemingly very good melee attacks
- Has an amazing victory screen
- Is very light and can be launched off screen easily
- Has average to slower speed
- Grab attacks are rather weak
- His range can accidentally backfire on him, and cause him to accidentally KO himself
- Despite his range, some attacks only have a very precise hitbox
- His attacks can be countered easily by faster opponents
- Due to his height, his hitbox is bigger than most other characters
- Most of his more powerful attacks require a long charge time
- His projectiles can be used against him
- His shield cannot reflect projectiles
