Ethiopian is actually pretty good, although ironically for food from an impoverished shithole, usually pretty pricy. Of course, what you get in an Ethiopian restaurant is more like something Haile Selassie would eat (when he wasn't eating foreign food) than commoners.
They're not actually bad, although a little bland if you don't flavor them up with something. He probably Scalfanied them up in some way though.

I've never seen them not slightly doctored up. In Costa Rica, they would generally get a small bit of caramelized sugar, or if the cook was lazy, powdered sugar on them. If someone's serving them without them being properly ripened with a modicum of additional flavor, it's going to be like chewing on an eraser.
I enjoyed them in Puerto Rico, cooked spicy savory by an old woman in her kitchen.
Maybe tolerable is a better word than enjoyed.
