Don't have any debt, my Dad allowed me to stay with him in exchange for paying the water/electricity bills and I worked full time so my BS didn't cost anything. If you really want something you have to sacrifice for it.

Or make sure your major pays afterward. Ghost once said if it don't make dollars, it don't make sense. Don't take out debt unless you know it will further your earnings potential; a business sure as hell wouldn't do this.

Question: The US Federal Government uses collection methods that are expressly illegal for the private collection industry to use [ and things we have researched that dont actually enhance collection rates. In some cases they inhibit them]. The federal government pays substantially more [ a net loss of 16% a year] then they make.....why should the current defective system continue?

Don't select a field with low pay or very few job openings ... instead of listening to the recruiter or reading the fluff collages hand out, go to a lot of job websites and look for 2 things:
1: what companies are paying for * entry level * positions
2: how many jobs are actually available at * entry level *

Please remember that you may need to specialize and get certifications to get decent pay - or in many cases, a real job in the chosen field.
.
.
.
If you can not find a decent paying job after you graduate ( or end up as a permanent intern ), it's * YOUR fault * for not doing the research before going into debt.
.
Bonus fact: many companies have 'black lists' of colleges they will not hire from - getting a degree from a crappy school will hurt your chances of finding good employment.
>What if I told you the impact of a student loan (on your credit rating) can prevent you from getting a job that pays good enough to pay back student loans

also not relevant to the topic I was wanting to dive into

In a normal situation, the HR manager isn't going to blink an eye at the credit rating of a fresh-out-of-collage applicant unless they have defaulted on something.

HR managers don't see that. Its all handled by computer software which flags you and puts you at the bottom of a list of (average) 100 applicants of which they can only look at 20. Your only chance to have an HR manager intervene on your behalf is if you have an internal advocate and the company is still small enough to allow that [or your skills are in high enough demand]

The US gov would put itself in a dangerous situation if it didn't have a way to collect with a near 100% certainty.

"What do you mean you denied me? Because I have no job, a criminal record and a dumb major... OR IS BECAUSE I'M BLACK?"

There are a broad scope of practices that are defined as harassment under the Law for other debt collectors that Student Loan collectors can do

and they dont work

I had two loans. One I already paid off (was only 2k) and one that's 22k. I had no clue what I was getting into and I am currently stuck at a job that doesn't have the greatest pay but at least it helps.

College is a shithole to begin with, College in America? Might as well jump off a bridge. I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't enough, those greedy fuckers would find a way so debt would be passed on to next of kin. Hell, you can declare bankruptcy and still be stuck with student debt because fuck you.

Remember how I mentioned they use a lot of illegal tactics

thats one of them

[though you can in very hyper specific circumstances declare bankruptcy on student loans]

22k? just keep living like a student for another year...

I've thought about going to europe for graduate school
yeah not such a good idea. the SJW menace is just hitting europe.
if you have anything to do with tech you are good, but i would suggest a technical college and not university.

I only went to trade school and the closest I've ever been to student loans is when I owed 200 dollars due to retaking a course

My college is free where I live, so I am not sure how I would handle student loans. I'd probably just have my parents pay the tuition before considering those.

Though if I lived in America, I'd just focus on improving my qualifications and skills during high school and see if I can get an entry level job for a few years after graduating, or do vocational school. It might not be much, but at least I'd be able to have something as a fund to help me through college, and I would probably be more mentally ready for it (if I would even bother considering it at that point).

I was lucky enough to be in a family where we planned for 8 years of post secondary- almost everyone in my family is in a professional field, or does a masters degree at least, so 4+ years is expected. I had no student debt upon graduation from bachelors, and in my current program I have yet to incur any and hopefully will not.

Been on them for about eight years now. About 12,500 left on mine and the plan I'm on was supposed to jack payments up every two years. Maybe it's that it wasn't all that noticeable before, but my payment just jacked up another $100 this month going forward. Wouldn't be an issue, except my mother is shoveling her own payment onto me and I haven't the heart to tell her off, considering I make relatively good money monthly, live frugally enough to mind my own business, and stay out of the way.

Her loan should be repaid around this time by next year, but the bump up coming in now is frustrating to say in the least. I've been considering refinancing for awhile, but seems like every private lender or bank you look into does everything differently. Either doesn't work with your school even if it was Title IV, demands you input every loan individually and won't let you refinance ones under $1000, or requires your gross income to be above a certain point.

I guess what I'm probing for are opinions. Like am I better off just going into Income Based for the time being and - because I'm not fucking stupid enough to think interest isn't building up and I should only pay what the number says exactly each month - just dish out the same $150 I was paying on and bide it for twenty more years? Or am I better off at this point refinancing and relying on good credit and rates to keep it in a comfortable, fixed position?

If you want to be a doctor or an attorney go to college, vast majority of people I know never use their degree in an applicable manner. A fake degree would be just as effective. Some blue collar jobs start at 100K with 6-12 month training programs. Oh you decided you don't like that job? that's cool only 1 semester and 1/10th the usual college debt was wasted that's it. If you're smart enough you can do your own thing, run your own business and make your own rules. If you really need college do a stint in the US services and get comped for college, especially if you want to go into a highly specialized field, friend of friend was a combat medic came out way ahead of his medical studies degree. Same thing with being an aircraft mechanic or anything technical, your engineering application looks great if you worked in the field https://www.thebalancecareers.com/marines-small-arms-repairer-3345393
