It looks like he's trying to imitate the scared facial expressions that are used in anime. It's not working very well, but it doesn't look horrible either, I guess.
Kudos to him for bettering his art to not look like 3 months old chunky cow shit. But as far as I see it, he'll never amount to anything more than another shitty stonetoss knockoff.

Hedgewik is really hit and miss. Some are pretty damn good IMO but, yeah, a lot are overly wordy messes and the art style isn't always a draw. Stonetoss's simplicity, both in regards to the art and the number of words he uses, really are to his benefit. Not actually sure there are many online comic strip artists around that understand the medium as well as Stonetoss does, which sometimes makes me wonder if he's not the alter ego of an established cartoonist. Dilbertman comes to mind, and he's even retweeted stonetoss at least once that I've seen. I mean it's extraordinarily doubtful, but It's a fun little theory.

I'm not well versed in QA shit, but from what little I know, no they aren't.
