They're also claiming that they were mocking people with panic attacks because they overplayed Pearl's reactions to the UG craziness. Never mind that, as the most "proper" minded one, she'd be the one to flip out the most over things that have no logic. It was funny as hell, but "muh PTSD triggered" or whatever.

Of course Tumblr has to take some genuinely funny jokes from an episode that I had very little faith in and make them seem like the spawn of Satan.

... Add some alcohol and it goes from being simply chuckle-worthy, to something to laugh at for hours. Almost.... At least IMHO.

And just like any actual good joke, it went over the Crystalfags' (Sorry, that's my current name for the fantards of this show... I can do better - and I know I'll have to...) Heads, like most actually good jokes seem to do far too much of with these comedy-challenged folk.
Personally, I think "Tumblrites" fits even better for these kinds of fans of SU. Wordplay and all that.

I'm curious, what are actual criticisms that people have of Greg that they dropped when they realized "OMG HE USED TO BE SOOOOOOOO HOT!!"?

Let's see....

  • Claims he's a bad father because he doesn't live with Steven.
  • Claims he's a neglectful father because he's not always around.
  • He's balding, overwight and has a bearld, so "typical cis MALE"
  • Works at a car wash, so lazy and unmotivated.
  • Messy, so he's a slob that doesn't keep things clean for his son, so he's neglectful again.
  • Lives in a van, therefore a worthless bum
Typical "grasping at straws/ignoring the actual facts" arguements.

Don't forget, she's usually the first one to flip out when things go wrong in previous episodes too.
But suddenly it's only a problem now, huh. Convenient.

To be fair, those are his negative traits and he doesn't hide them. However, they're balanced, from what I've seen, with his genuine love and concern for his son and his wellbeing. That in spite of everything, he provides for his son. It's fucking disgusting that Tumblr pulls a 180 when they find out he "used to be hot."

You see, something else about it all is that it completely ignores one of the major themes/morals of the show, which you'd think tumblr would latch onto.
Greg is not supposed to be anybody super special. He definitely pales in comparison to the magical gem warriors. But the show makes a point of showing that Rose loved Greg because she just kind of saw beauty in everything, even the underwhelming and seemingly ugly.
Tumblr should fucking love this idea and latch onto it. But because Greg a character with unlovable traits unlike their perfect precious gems, he's an exception to the rule.
And of course, this all makes it even more baffling when people phrase it as "now I see why Rose liked him".
We already saw why Rose liked him. Rose liked him because she's not a shallow piece of shit.

I think part of it is that her panicky tendencies were deliberately exaggerated in this episode for comedy. The Tumblrites don't really understand that that's the joke.

They think 'this is not canon' is supposed to be an excuse about Uncle Grandpa dressing like a woman or something, and not that you're supposed to not expect plot or character development because the writers and all are just going to fool around all day.

Tumblrites are dumb, and sadly, I don't know if they're dumb on purpose or not.

Well duh, making a character panic in an exaggerated and comedic way is ableist against people that actually have panic attacks!

...It hurt me to say that.

I wonder what happened to this generation of kids that they are so scared of growing up. Between the "safe spaces" "trigger warning" and "fandoms" of children's show it seems to me that they're doing everything they can to stay children.

What are they so afraid of?

Remember years back how parents got all up in arms about children actually competing in sports and that they shouldn't keep score and everyone is equal and should get a trophy and stuff?

That's what happened to this generation.

When it's harder for you to get a job and a house than it was for your parents and you're being crushed by crippling student loan debt I guess it's easier to just hide under the blankets and distract yourself with something more innocent.

I can understand that fear but you gotta learn to suck it up like everybody else.

To be honest? I think it's some sort of Peter Pan syndrome or an unconscious fear of death. Maybe both.

Funny, when did death threats over cosplays and biting the hand that feeds you become "inconsequential?" Tumblr wanted their own phenomenon to rival bronies for years. They finally got what they wanted and they will live with it. Not only that, they outdid bronies. They really did. What they lack in volume of porn they make up quadruple in absolute craziness and idiocy.
