When you're psychotic your brain's ability to recognize patterns start to amplify, so you'll start to label things as important and connected to something alot bigger than that. You're convinced you know the answer to everything due to your mind making connections which is why alot of schizos couldn't help themselves but completely divorce from reality.
Im of the belief that a certain percentage of people who went 'schizo' actually stumbled upon something they weren't supposed to see and were made crazy by pharmaceuticals or some other mkultra bullshit. Leonard Kille and Frank Olson come to mind.
