A game on Steam was found to contain malware that would steal login credentials, crypto and other stuff.
In short, a malicious attacker gained access to the developer's account for a small game called Rodent Race, replaced everything with a new game, made it free, and hid malware in a file called UnityPlayer.dll. He then proceeded to steal the information from anyone who downloaded the game. Apparently, and from what I've read, this was possible because Steam doesn't verify update files.

The game, now called Beyond The Dark, was removed from the store, though some keys still appear to be circulating from before the hijack. If you downloaded the game, you should consider updating your passwords (emails, crypto wallets, and other sensitive stuff) and run some anti-malware.

Its funny how this isnt the first time this happened and, if anything, hackers are catching on to this exploit (Steam verifies the base files on launch but doesnt any new ones on updates). This really is something for both devs and players to watch out for, especially the former because if their computers get hijacked, there is a chance the hackers can steal their games, update them with malware files and screw every player over.
Steam really should start analizing update files too
Steam can suck a fucking dick. Someone from kyiv was able to access my account (why the fuck would it even allow them in the first place? im in a whole other country and have never logged in from outside a 200mi radius in 17 years) and now certain games i just get kicked for even playing. Supports answer is get fucked. How can I get my revenge? Realistically i can go full autism and make 100 accounts and infinitely spam support tickets like its a full time job, id like a better idea though. I remember i used that tactic on NordVPN when they said no refunds.. got my refund

Nah I had 2FA, and my email was not compromised that I could tell at the time. I think someone copied my log in cookie or something. I'll agree that I'm retarded, but the zero tolerance policy is kind of bullshit when technology is skyrocketing and new exploits are coming out all the time, not to mention steam will sell you malware directly.
Well, might as well buy your Steam Decks while you still can because apparently the RAM crisis still didnt complete its penile thrust into our finances, hopes and dreams.

I saw this image on /v/ a few days ago. It seems that every time Steam is mentioned on /v/, the contrarians come out of the woodworks to start shit up. Which is fine, Steam or Valve are in no way perfect, nor should be free of criticism.
I like the lack of quality control point. Do you guys remember how the whole "anything is allowed on Steam" thing started back in 2018? Do you remember how Steamies bitched and complained about censorship or Valve's outright removal of borderline pornographic games? Who would have imagined that "allowing everything" would also give way to low-quality shovelware, asset flips, and even the occasional malware...
I don't mind porn or low-quality games on Steam, but a "anything goes" policy is excessive. Steam should have a basic quality threshold.
Now imagine how bad other platforms are.

Epic should just exploit millennials and Gen Z’s largest weakness to grow its user base…. Gambling.
Instead of giving away free games they should just take those millions of dollars spending on said games and have lotteries every few months for $1000+ gaming rigs as long as the account is few months old and has a minimum amount of purchase history.

The open source bullet point is cute, these people do know that's the entirety of software development across all industries right? Open source software is the backbone of numerous companies, many far richer and more influential than Valve. They may have a point with it (especially if any Valve devs aren't contributing in return), but are missing the forest for the trees.
Valve is pretty mediocre at software development, they're a godsend for convenience, for example their join and invite API is great, but most of their recent software is pretty awful. The new recordings feature is dogshit as an example. Why not just make it like Nvidia's solution?
