"Starred" conversations? - Can I get clarification?

Lots of stuff changed while I was gone for a year; the leak and all that. And something I didn't expect was that personal messages no longer last past a month.
This made a lot of past conversations and new ones a bit tricky, until I noticed an option to "star" one.

Obviously this is some sort of 'bookmark' or cue if you have tons of them, but I'm wondering if it also has a 'save' function to it, like it won't disappear after the timeframe?

Sadly, I can't even try this out for nearly a month, since I didn't know about it before others I sent vanished. So I thought I'd just ask.

It does not. For the protection of users all PMs are deleted after 30 days of no activity.

Actually, I have one more question.

"30 days of no activity"; is this 30 days from the start of the conversation, or 30 days after the date of the last reply?

I always print out the DMs I'd like my family to find in my effects after I die of COVID and put them in a file on my shelf.
