I've made a comment that probably going to get me hated on the red letter media page but you know what the more I look at the newest star wars the more I kind of realise that this whole thing is really banking on the original trilogy.

Say what you want about the prequils but really for all of their faults at this they failed on their own merits.
It looks like nothing has changed in the 30 odd years this film is set in.

I really don't think the fact that the prequels were trying to be more "original" was necessarily a good thing. Maybe if the resulting films were better than what we got, it might be different, but they weren't so much trying for new an innovative ideas as they were chasing novelty and flashy 3D special effects. They completely disregarded what gave the original movies their charm in the first place, and simply tried to churn out a mega blockbuster by making a sleek, shiny CGI space movie and thoughtlessly throwing some lightsabers in it.

I some what agree but really this one just hasen't given me anything really new to see in this universe really after thirty years everything seems to be the same still. hell from a lot of the trailers it looks like nothing has changed in the slightest. the good guys and the bad guys are still obivious and well it's just kind of getting to me that the reason they haven't revealed the story yet is because of all of the simluarities to a new hope

I'm not entirely sure what you mean here, or what you were expecting or hoping to be different (maybe you were hoping for the Empire to be the good guys this time?) but 30 years isn't a very long time for stuff to change that drastically. And if the story has similarities to a new hope, it won't be much of a surprise, because ANH is based very heavily on the Hero's Journey (or Monomyth), which is thought to be a bit of a template for a lot of fictional stories. Unless it follows it so closely that it's going through the same plot points, I doubt it'll be unenjoyable unless you're actively looking for an excuse to not enjoy it.

I feel like I'm seeing plenty of new stuff myself. A lot of the bad guys are new, we haven't seen a stormtrooper who's a force user before (in the movies anyway), and I'm interested to see what it is that Vader was doing that they're trying to "finish" because it could be any number of things. I'm also interested to see what happened with the rebellion, especially with what Han says about the stuff with the force being true, implying that this isn't common knowledge anymore, and the implication that Luke is out on his own, possibly hiding away. There's a lot that I'm excited to learn about just from these trailers.
 
Disney intends to keep putting out a new Stars Movie every year indefinitely until people stop buying tickets. I am not surprised. If they are going to milk it, they should at least wait every thee years so people don't get sick of it.
"A lot more" to the tune of one every year for as long as they can. In fact, Rogers thinks that Disney will milk Star Wars so hard, and for so long, that if you were alive when A New Hope launched back in the 70s, you'll probably be dead by the time they stop making new ones.

Eh fair enough. looking back I guess I was acting like one of the eu fanboys, I have to admit that nothing from the trailers has made me dislike the movie.
 
It annoys me how some people actually think that Luke will turn evil in this movie or at some point in the sequel trilogy. Him doing so would ruin the whole point of ROTJ where he learns from his father's mistakes and chooses to reject the dark side. It's even more dumb when they use his outfit from the movie as evidence when it was already stated that the outfit was supposed to be what the Jedi wore during the days of the Republic and that the robes Obi-wan and Yoda wore was to help them go into hiding (before the Prequels threw that out of the window). I'd rather see him as a mentor figure than a dark side user.

I've just seen it (because my timezone is ahead of most, yaaaay) and I'm not going to post any spoilers obviously, but just a few things:
  1. ...Jesus Christ. :( </3
  2. I liked it, but I thought it was a little reliant on the older cast. The new characters were great though and it was a fun time, so it was still definitely worth being up until 3am for.
  3. As soon as we walked out my partner just looked at me really sadly and went "I'm just glad Obi-Wan is dead so nothing else can happen to him". She loves him so much and it's beautiful.
That's probably all I have to contribute for now. I stay out of Star Wars discussions outside specific circles most of the time because my opinions disgust people (read: I like the prequels and don't feel bad about it :P). Can't wait to see other people weigh in; it was quite divisive even before it came out so it's going to be interesting to see what everyone thinks!

So do you think it lives up to the hype or is that heartbreak you lamenting the franchise.
 
As of right now there's probably a least 5 dorks who went to the 10 AM showing this morning here in Brussels
Saw a bit of Chris Stuckmann's review, saw a /tv/ spoiler (saw it coming from a mile away), that's all I need to hear before Friday

Saw it too, my opinion on it (and most fans):
It's literally A new Hope revisited. With a bit fanservice added. They couldn't have made it more blatant.

Doesn't mean that it was a BAD movie, certainly better than the prequels, but it's nothing new or exciting either, it was way too safe. Hopefully now that the characters are sets the sequel will do that, assuming they don't introduce even more characters to milk like that stormtrooper general that was completely irrelevant to the movie.

Haha! Well, there are definitely some heartbreaking moments which was more what I was talking about. It was a pretty stressful movie!
The hype here was actually pretty subdued compared to what I've seen from folks in the States and such so I don't know if I have an accurate projection of the hype to start with. For me I had pretty mixed feelings; there were bits I loved and bits I was really "eh" about. I suppose that it was what I paid for and I had a really good time watching it, but it didn't totally blow my expectations out of the water or anything. The main detractor for me is...
...that I honestly think Kylo Ren is the most annoying villain in the films so far. He is seriously such a tantrummy little brat, which is kind of a bummer because I was hoping he would be cool and badass. :( My partner and I just ended up calling him "Daddy Issues McGee" after the film was over.
Luckily a lot of the supporting villains (like Capt. Fazma and that... other guy who hung out with Kylo Ren a lot) seem pretty cool and interesting, so I'm excited to see more of them!
I kind of feel like I need to watch it again without my MIDNIGHT RELEASE goggles on, since those always makes things seem more exciting than they are.
