I've made a comment that probably going to get me hated on the red letter media page but you know what the more I look at the newest star wars the more I kind of realise that this whole thing is really banking on the original trilogy.
Say what you want about the prequils but really for all of their faults at this they failed on their own merits.
It looks like nothing has changed in the 30 odd years this film is set in.
That's true. Even though Lucas did reuse a lot of old motifs and ideas, he did try to give us an original story.
I really don't think the fact that the prequels were trying to be more "original" was necessarily a good thing. Maybe if the resulting films were better than what we got, it might be different, but they weren't so much trying for new an innovative ideas as they were chasing novelty and flashy 3D special effects. They completely disregarded what gave the original movies their charm in the first place, and simply tried to churn out a mega blockbuster by making a sleek, shiny CGI space movie and thoughtlessly throwing some lightsabers in it.
