Speaking of Death Troopers, has anyone read Lockdown by the same guy? Its Darth Maul in a super space prison that also has illegal gladiatorial fights because of course it does. Very schlocky, not a deep read by any stretch, but I enjoyed it.

I also enjoyed the Darth Bane trilogy. Drew Karpyshyn is pretty good about coming with interesting ideas that if not exactly true sci-fi, are fun enough in a fantastical sort of way. Also averts the obvious love interest, which is bonus points in my book.

I know of Lockdown but haven’t read it.

I have read Darth Bane trilogy. It was really good. I especially liked the ending to Book 3.

It strikes me sometimes how much Gundam and Star Wars EU content can parallel the "uhh yeah so that magic shit yeah nah" approach of using the source material.

Basically, yes. Some of the best UC Gundam material out there are the OVAs that purposefully ignore the Newtype shit and just focus on gritty war dramas. As for Star Wars, it depends on the writer.
