Alcohol and Ethanol are simple chemical compounds and should be easy as shit to produce in any variety of drinkable combinations. You would think that it would have been one of the first things replicators would have been able to make.

I also assume that those colored cubes that they eat in TOS are early replicator foods. Square chunks are the food of the future.

Why would they need a replicator to make explosives when every computer on the ship is loaded with enough gunpowder to launch an ensign across the bridge?

I regret they never continued with this idea. I feel like once food printers become a reality and younger generations become accustomed to fake food, people will start experimenting with exotic tastes and textures until what people eat doesn't even resemble actual food anymore. Had they continued with the whole future food idea, it would have also made stuff like the Picard Vineyard and the Sisko restaurant much more compelling since it'd make more sense to show traditional food and drink as being a lost art. Its a minor thing to get hung up on I know, but the idea is still interesting to me.

I assumed that there would be some upgrades even to regular ships as well as tactics developed following Wolf 359. No way did the Federation approach the second invasion of a cube the same way twice. Borg shields seem rather dumb if they can't stop something as common as kinetic attacks as well, but a foe with adaptive shields would need to be creativity beaten in a different way, ala "sleep", and so on. First Contact was action focused so just shoot it until it explodes.

In theory the Borg would be nearly unbeatable.

Think for a moment how originally the Dominion weapons went straight through federation shields (and they took out a galaxy class starship). What then? Well the federation pooled its minds together and all those brains working together combined knowledge, experience, and data to come up with a way to adjust their shields so that when the Dominion tried to take DS9, they found the federation shields holding. "I've learned to never underestimate the Federation's technical skill. Or Captain Sisko's resourcefulness." -Dukat.

The Borg are essentially all that - super streamlined. Instead of needing months to gather the nerds together and get the committees working, as soon as they are hit with a weapon, the nerd specialists in the collective are pouring over the data and developing the countermeasures in minutes, instead of months.

The original BoBW ended the only way a fight with the Borg ever could. By using their interconnectedness against them and sending a bad command into the hive mind that got them shut down.

It really is ironic when you think about it. Humanity's super power that has let them conquer Earth is basically cooperative teamwork. The Borg is the ultimate manifestation of that super power. If something like them were encountered out there in space - could you ever really beat them?

It's no wonder the writers started gimping them.

The best Trek enemies are the Romulans and Cardassians because they reflect the darkest impulses of humanity. DS9 killing off their respective overpowered secret services added to this IMHO.

The Borg are just space zombies that work best when used very sparingly. Voyager should have had a season where they traversed slowly through Borg space, avoid confrontation at all costs, teaming up with other surviors and keeping the borg off-screen as a looming threat.

When Admiral Janeway was exchanging insults with the Borg queen the whole series just became a 90s Captain Proton.

The USS Odyssey even without shields was capable of tanking hits with her bare hull for several minutes and need a Jemmie Bug kamikaze to destroyed her.

The Borg are just space zombies that work best when used very sparingly. Voyager should have had a season where they traversed slowly through Borg space, avoid confrontation at all costs, teaming up with other surviors and keeping the borg off-screen as a looming threat.

That would be a perfect opportunity to bring in Species 8472 albeit heavily nerfed TF down to being equal to the Borg. Equal as in who ever fires first and lands the hit wins. Their war creating the gaps for Voyager sneak through and hordes of fleeing ships to hide in while the Borg are distracted. And the only thing the crew of Voyager can do is run as long as they're in Borg space it will be assimilation or death for them.

SFDebris has a great joke that the Borg picked that moment to attack precisely because the Sisko was indisposed so they knew they had a chance.

Especially when you realize that First Contact had the screw split between the ship and the planet with an A and B plot to it - so it would be only natural to have Sisko (and maybe some others of DS9) head up one of those plots while Picard and TNG headed up the other.

A plot with Picard, Worf and Sisko trying to take back the ship. The Dixon Hill sequence can stay because honestly that was pretty cool and I wouldn't blame Picard for that, as long as he immediately says "What have I done? They could have been saved!" Meanwhile Worf and Sisko going ham, some cool sequences involving Sisko being narrowly assimilated but saved by Worf with a bat'leth.

B plot on the surface with the Enterprise crew helping Cochrane, Sisko initally going to go join them but something happening during the deflector dish sequence making him not able to join them for some reason. Lily Sloane being accidentally transported up to the ship during this time while they were trying to beam down some kind of supplies, and going along with The Sisko. Or what actually happened in the film - I liked the sequence with the EMH, anyway. (Manual reminder that Robert Picardo was in TNG, DS9, and VOY, and might be in STD and STP.)

I wouldn't bring any other named character from DS9 over though (aside from *maybe* Miles.. If only because he deserved a return as much as Worf did.)

The first season of TNG was pretty bad, but one great episode was "Conspiracy".

That's the one with the alien bugs that infest people and wear them like a skin suit and are plotting to take over Starfleet. It's not a very original idea (Invasion of the Bodysnatchers was already an ancient trope by 1988) but it's executed well, with an unusual amount of body horror for Star Trek.

It has a perfectly downbeat ending too. The conspiracy is stopped for now, but the brain bugs get out a signal to their bug buddies, and the show all but ends with "To Be Continued".

So of course we never see them again.

Which is a shame, because unlike the Borg, the Cardies, or the Romulans, who were all pretty much WYSIWYG bad guys, the brain bugs were a creepy, insidious threat that allowed the show to explore paranoia. Probably wouldn't have made a good villain of the week because they look like dung beetles, but the writers could've done something interesting with them trying to complete their plan and get revenge on Picard.

Plus, the part where Remmick was all like "we seek peaceful coexistence" and Picard and Riker are like "nope", and phaser the fuck out of him until his head explodes was genuinely badass.

It's too bad Picard couldn't have been competently written. They could have made a return as the villains and opened up some grimdark stories without resorting to the gibberish that STP opted for.
