In 2019, trying to extrapolate from current social trends gets you... what? I honestly can't even take a stab at where all this will go in a few centuries if it continues in current direction at current pace, and clearly neither can sci-fi authors

It's totally possible to write something about a current trend but what you need is a good writer. See The Orville for example with the "planet Reddit" episode (if you have too many downvotes you're forced to get a lobotomy). The story was based on a book and shared similar points with what is happening in China and also in western countries where people can get their lives ruined by a random post on social media.
I don't think the current team of writers at CBS/Bad Robot could come up with an episode like that. They don't want to write actual science fiction.

A big part of the problem with recent Trek is how melodramatic they are and how they have to constantly resort to "telling" instead of "showing" when it comes to Starfleet. I'm sick of characters stopping and giving "We're Starfleet and we're humanitarians and rescue people. Wow. Much values and optimism" speeches. Kirk and Picard did their fucking jobs to get the point across to the audience.

I was watching this and realized one of the dog people was Marc Alaimo (Gul Dukat) in what must have been his first appearance on Star Trek. The Enterprise is bringing them to peace talks and the dog people murder and eat an ambassador from the rival species at the end of the episode and everyone has a good chuckle about it.

Out of excitement for Star Trek: Picard (Just kidding, that's gonna be shit, lol) I have decided to re-watch TNG from the beginning. In retrospect, Season 1 of TNG is probably setting my expectations fairly close to what "Star Trek: Picard" is going to be, lol. (Again kidding, I don't believe Star Trek: Picard will be even remotely as "good" as TNG season 1 was...) I wasn't kidding about watching TNG from the beginning though, better times and all that.

I would say the opposite, I don't think anything can match just how uncomfortable and bad TNG Season 1 was. As bad as Discovery is, I haven't seen anything from it as bad as Code of Honor.

Bitch, I am a conoissuer of media pain and suffering. I sure as hell will argue over eating broken glass versus drinking bleach!

A small drop of bleach is harmless (Can even be used as an emergency water purification) while a tiny shard of glass will still cut you.

In all seriousness, TNG Season 1 is probably my most hated Trek season, but it is part of an outstanding series while Discovery is not.

So I've been watching the original series for the first time recently, and it's a really good time. The show's got some legitimately interesting episodes and thought-provoking concepts. But what stands out to me the most though is Shatner's acting. Specifically how it doesn't resemble the parodies that have been made of him over the years. Even if it's supposed to be an exaggeration, I still don't see how it resembles him in the slightest. He's not that bad an actor, a little overdramatic yes, but he can act well.

Then again, I'm still on the first season so I don't know if it's like that for the whole series or if his acting degrades.
