TOS is the exception due to CBS having had enough of the show and sidelined it to the 10 o'clock friday timeslot. In general, 90s Star Trek did get better by the third season. DS9 had okay episodes here and there, but it's really seasons 3, 4, and 5 does it get exceptional. Enterprise does get better by season 4, but that was due to a change in management. In fairness to Picard, Matalas is a change in management... sort of. Matalas is a Dave Filoni-type and exerts the kind of influence a middle manager would. He still has to follow company guidelines such as extremely dark lighting, have a young character who's the key to everything, and a sword-wielding maniac that sneaks up on people first, but he has authority otherwise.

But why should I care that the show is now up to Bad TNG movie when The Orville exists?

IIRC Voyager was never really stellar but it was consistent (barring Threshold). Not sure about "The Rock" episode, never saw it don't know if its threshold bad. Never seen enterprise. Maybe someday. Not couting any of the new shows. They aren't star trek. Will never watch the orville. Why should I give a shit about some show cosplaying as star trek?

Because The Orville is produced by Brannon Braga and is on-brand as a Star Trek show. Nice, even fluorescent lighting, many episodes are episodic, characters are generally pleasant and largely competent.

Enterprise is worth at least one view through.

Voyager... when it was good, it was VERY good, but when it was bad, it was VERY bad. It's a show that worked because it had excellent casting, but the writing itself often let it down. Enterprise... had less good casting so all the problems in that show were more apparent.

By the time the end of Voyager/Enterprise rolled out trek had been on TV continuously for 13-14 years. Some fatigue had set in so I haven't seen much of the last 3 seasons of Voyager and none of Enterprise.

Going to rewatch Voyager fairly soon. I'm betting it will look a lot better compared to the garbage that's on these days.

Might even watch Enterprise.

Which is funny because TNG and on were pioneers in using green screen compositing. That's what the Holodeck was really.

I mostly remember Sonequa-Green from The Walking Dead and I did not like her in that show, so there's a little bias about her role in Discovery, and also I remember reading something how she claimed she was the first Black captain in Star Trek.

I've seen a lot of mental gymnastics to make this true, like how Sisko doesn't count because he's not captain of a ship and the likes. Sisko isn't even the first black Captain we've seen in Star Trek.

Funny how despite they all are white and liberal, each of them has a very distinct personality. IICR, many of them have got different opinions about different things and ethic dilemmas through the show. Membah when they were celebrating Thanksgiving and Willow went full libtard saying it as an offensive holiday while Spike told her to STFU and stop feeling guilty for it. Xander, Giles, and Faith also had very different opinions about Angel than the rest of the gang. Cordelia was very much non PC, calling people "retards" and "lesbos" like it was nothing. Angel was very conservative too (for obvious reason), unlike Spike. Xander was too, in his own way. Anya was a hardcore capitalist. Giles and Wesley were very traditionalists, Buffy never truly cared for rules and was fine with breaking traditions.

Oh, noes, people could have opposite political opinions and still be friendly and good! The shock and horror.

I'm watching both Enterprise and Voyager on a "When I'm not doing other shit" basis and I vastly prefer Enterprise's simplicity for now, there's no Starfleet, no Federation, everyone distrusts transporters so they get down to a planet with these very dated shuttlepods.

Speaking of shuttlepods, I strongly recommend this podcast hosted by Connor Trineer and Dominic Keating, Trip and Reed from Enterprise.

They got some pretty big names for now, I can't wait for the day when they'll find Avery Brooks and have him on the show. Also their episode names are awesome.

Destiny honestly handled the Borg the best way. The Borg were formed as a freak accident time travel alien-human merger. They didn't come together organically, they have no "homeworld". They're the result of a series of fuck ups that involved psychological damage being perpetuated for the sake of survival expanding in a failed echo of its original species dreams.

The Borg aren't omnipotent, they are simply a mistake. A powerful mistake that caused untold destruction and grief, especially in the Delta Quadrant, but neither the ultimate power in the universe or the greatest challenge ever faced.

It's funny because, Sisko aside, there's been Black representation in Star Trek before him, and yet Sonequa ignored the whole bit and jumped ahead.

It's funny because beyond the occasional clit-tickling of Uhura for breaking racial barriers that I was way too young to understand (the show had been cancelled for like 30 years by the time I watched it) no one gave a shit about the diversity of Star Trek. The actors and characters were just there and from my perhaps naïve grade schooler perspective, no one was crowbarring in obvious quotas, at least nothing like they are today.

TNG was my go-to and I'd watch after school in-between the Simpsons and America's Funniest Home Videos. Michael Dorn was Worf and he's black as hell but there were tons of other white guys playing Klingons too and not a single person batted an eyelash at the make up or implications from midwit grievance studies majors. Try getting a white guy into the Klingon makeup now and tell me how that goes for you. Geordie was Geordie. The colour of his skin meant nothing and he didn't jive talk or speak like he was in the hood on Ten Forward in his off-hours. He was kind of a fuckin loser, actually. Guinan was just a wise and vaguely supernatural force. Maybe if you squint hard you could get pissed that she's a magical negro or the mami trope but no one watching that with two brain cells to rub together who wasn't infected with parasites could get upset because she was written and acted really, really well.

I think this kind of highlights one of the fundamental issues with nuTrek: it's made by a bunch of people who actually have no love or understanding of the source material but pretending they do on the basis of cultural osmosis. This could work in theory if they were competent and smart enough to assimilate themselves into the universe but they aren't and actively refuse to, and lean into the worst trends of popular media while antagonising and attacking critics rather than actually improving.
