Legend I heard is in the DS9 days they actually would read and occasionally accept such submissions. Not sure how they avoided the legal pitfalls you usually hear given for why writers/shows never even open an unsolicited script. It'd be cool of companies started doing so again, maybe using some third-party reader to ensure legal protections should they refuse the script.

They absolutely did accept submissions as far back as tng. There were specific sets of guidelines for how they had to be written and what was and wasn't accepted. Oddly enough the production team for ds9 made it an explicit rule that no stories involving thomas riker would be accepted. For whatever reason that they have never explained, they wanted nothing to do with that particular story thread

In fairness the Thomas Riker arc was pretty stupid. Like yeah, Riker's a rebel with a saxophone, but what if we did a Superboy-Prime on him and the copy was even more of a bitchy chaos muppet?

Well good thing Paramount didn't try anything risky and untried like that as they hurled hundreds of millions of dollars at shows that even the nerdiest Trek fan didn't want to watch. What if, instead of letting fans have a shot at writing, we do something super retarded like a musical episode--even though the whole High School Musical fad died down over a decade ago?

Alex Kurtzman wasn't the first to destroy Trek but he may very well be the last. Guess what religion/ethnicity/protected-class he belongs too?

I remember they had a rule against submitting "sequels". Which sucked because there were dangling story threads that I wanted to try tying up.
But I don't think they followed that rule too closely because a fan submitted the episode that was a sequel to the Lore/Crystalline Entity episode from Season 1. The one with the female scientist whose son was killed.

I guarantee that directive came from Gene & and his little freak court eunuch Richard Arnold, the guy who spent the '90s excommunicating TOS novelists because God forbid anyone else have a good idea in Gene’s utopia.

Fans didn’t help. TNG got initial flak for focusing too much on Federation or Klingon politics instead of new planets. You still get dudes clutching their pearls over Deep Space Nine not "boldly going" far enough. I actually got into a spat with a Voyager fan in college because I said DS9 was better. We were on opposite ends of the room yelling about Janeway like it was the Scopes Monkey Trial.

While I am grateful for when we got Garak commenting on The Boy Who Cried Wolf, I do sometimes wish DS9 had more segments like the one with Quark there looking at moments of Earth history.

I will admit I did like the episode in TNG where Worf gets that weird sub-space thing where he pops between parallel universes.

The bit when Troi waltzes into what Worf thinks is his cabin and starts to make herself comfortable as Worf looks on in disbelief/confusion always cracks me up.

"Can I help you Councillor?" a slightly grumpy and confused Worf as Troi enters without a knock or hello.
"No thank you Lieutenant" a bemused Troi says archly as she walks past him for the bathroom.
*confused Worf noises"

I love how Worf, the big bad warrior, gets creeped out when what he thinks is the ships counsellor undoes his braid and starts to rub his shoulders. A good chuckle every time.

Sucks that in the end we learn that "that" Troi's Worf is probably lost forever in another universe. Seeing Troi tear up as Data explains it is kinda rough but a good moment.

Good stuff! Classic TNG IMHO.

I think telling him about what led to 1929, 1987 and 2007/8 would make his skin crawl, but not in the way you might think. Hoo-mans are even more greedy than he could possibly imagine.

It says a lot when fucking Discovery had more respect for opera. Granted, it was Kasseelian opera, not Klingon opera, but it's close enough.

In general, the music of the Star Trek universe is a gold mine of potential worldbuilding. It's an interesting way to flesh out alien cultures.

What if Vulcan music was soft and gentle to make it appeal to those with sensitive hearing?

What if Andorian music was loud and boisterous to reflect their passionate culture?

What if Tellarite music was centered around rap battles to turn arguments into performances?
