tfw you will never be this badass

I would have been vaporized when I was 2 months old if it wasn't for him.

Farewell, Comrade Petrov. Your prudence saved uncountable souls, so may your own know eternal peace.

It's a shame more people don't know about him. May he rest in peace.

It probably has to do with how incredibly humble he was. Nobody even knew about the incident until like a decade later, after Petrov's commander wrote a memoir that contained the story. Petrov never considered himself to be a hero, even though he clearly was. In an interview for the film The Man Who Saved the World, Petrov said:
All that happened didn't matter to me — it was my job. I was simply doing my job, and I was the right person at the right time, that's all. My late wife for 10 years knew nothing about it. 'So what did you do?' she asked me. 'Nothing. I did nothing.'
The best heroes are the ones who let their actions speak for themselves. Petrov probably saved the lives of millions of people and ensured that global stability continued, and he never even bragged about it. When an amazing man, may he rest in peace.

To think we almost got taken out by sunlight of all things.

I recently watched a documentary series on the Cold War and those various nuclear EAS videos on YouTube. It's astounding how many times we were so close on really fucking up.

Many thanks to Petrov and all the other cooler heads who all saved us from ourselves.
