St. Elmo's Fire is the all time great guilty pleasure; is it a good movie? Hell no, but I could watch it on repeat for the rest of my life.
Points For:
1. Score/Title Song are absolute bangers
2. Ally Sheedy and Demi Moore are hot as fuck
3. Probably the only time the brat pack came close to being in a good movie that had nothing to do with John Hughes
4. It's by the kinomaestro Joel Schulmaker.
5. The movie tackles its biggest problem (everyone being retarded) by not giving anyone a happy ending
Points Against:
1. Emilio Estevez's subplot was retarded
2. Rob Lowe's subplot was retarded (although I liked Jenny Wright as his wife)
3. They could have picked anyone but Mare Winningham to be Jewish (who ironically converted in real life)
4. You can't really root for anyone, but the movie expects you to.
There is a good movie somewhere within St. Elmo's Fire, and I think that's its enduring charm. But for most people, it'll be a hard watch.
