As was hinted at multiple times, Maroon 5 paid tribute to the animated show, whose creator, Stephen Hillenburg, died in November, at Sunday's Super Bowl in Atlanta.

But the tribute was short. So short. Shorter than SpongeBob's success in boating school.

Instead, a very brief clip of Squidward, SpongeBob and pals from that performance were shown on the big screen at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz stadium.

There were several pregame hints that the tribute would be happening, including a peek at SpongeBob in a video released by the band, and a glimpse spotted by news anchor Jamal N. Williams earlier in the week at a rehearsal.

More than 1.2 million fans had signed a pregame Change.org petition asking that the band play the song at the show.

How long do they have to plan these performances? If it was planned months ago and the money was spent, then it’s understandable that they couldn’t fit in sweet victory. But if that’s the case, then they shouldn’t have hyped it up in the first place.

damn, well that's a disappointment. it's the superbowl halftime though, so i'm not surprised.

Adam Levine is a fucking tool, so not very surprising to say the least.

So business as usual huh?

At this point, what's the use of it when they get dying acts or suffer major technical issues. I mean the Janet Jackson incident should have killed off the halftime event, yet it still presses on and most of them are complete garbage.

I don't what's more insulting, the dumpster fire of a half time show or Adam Levine.

This is Justin Timberlake's fault. If he hadn't showed the world Janet Jackson's titty we'd still be getting decent Superbowl acts rather than the corporate approved safe options.

One job. You had one fucking job. Play 2 minutes of the song with the episode on the background putting a little dedicatory to Stephen Hillenburg at the end. How out of touch were the people behind this shit? They didn't know that actually liked the moment on the episode and not a just a fucking clip? Tbh i'm not surprised: why ask corporate hacks and a shitty band to have respect for someones work?

Found this on Twitter, which is probably the worst part of it.
Oh don't worry, I'm sure their career will be murdered after this.

After all, it's been in its dying throes for a few years. Might as well put it out of its misery sooner or later.
