Combining soap opera, superhero adventures and "muh racism!" was set-up to be a recipe for disaster. Everyone preferred the soap opera love triangles adventure aspect than the social aspect stuff. Also, technically Captain America is an artificial mutant but he's too American to be considered one.

At most, maybe they look at readcomicsonline and read their friends gay, awfully drawn, poorly written trash but they aren't reading or buying DC. DC already has a bunch of black characters people like, not because they're black, but because when they're written well they're good and fun characters like anyone else. John Stewart, Lucious Fox, Amanda Waller, Cyborg, Static Shock, Vixen. on and on and on. Those characters are too boring? It's your job as a writer then to make them interesting.

You know what's my personal favorite era of Spider-Man? The Michelline run in the late 80s with McFarlane and Erik Larsen, partly because Peter's in a part of his life where him and MJ are a young married couple and that's not something you saw in comics. At least Barda and Mister Miracle are still together, I think? If they ever break them up, then truly the west has fallen(TM).

I was throwing shit at a wall, but that does sound like a good metacommentary on modern Spidey. It's not great power and responsibility anymore.
