As for John, he gave up on his speedrunning ambitions immediately after his other time was beat, not even attempting to put up a better time. I think he still bragged occasionally about being the best Peach speedrunner in the world for a while, despite the stupidity of such a statement, but I don't think he brings it up anymore.

You forgot to mention that he ran the game at Frost Fatales 2023, the winter edition of GDQ's "all-women-and-femmes" (funny how they make the separation) speedrunning event.

As for specific RPG speedrunners, Keizaron was one of if not the biggest smug asshole involved with GDQ who mostly ran RPG games. Funnily enough he also had a run of Pokémon Emerald that went overestimate, except that time it was in the middle event so runs had to be canceled so as to not ruin the schedule entirely. Now that I think about it, the only reason why they agreed to showcase Pokémon Emerald this year was because it was the finale, so even if things would (predictably) go sideways, it wouldn't be such a disaster for the remainder of the event. I mean, there's a reason why this screenshot exists:

I used to have AGDQ vids play on a second screen for a few years, but now it's borderline unwatchable. It's all a gamble on what combination of things makes it insufferable to sit through:

• God awful in-jokes they keep spouting
• The audience constantly yelling something obnoxious
• The runner having the worst commentary known to man
• The donation reader blabbering non-stop
• The donations themselves being repetitive or saying something stupid every ten seconds
• Anyone with a mic trying to be quirky like doing a baby voice or singing

One of the best AGDQ speedruns I remember was for Hotline Miami 1. The runner asked for the audio to be boosted saying it was too quiet, then walked into a room that makes a massive, speaker destroying explosion before saying "You can turn the volume back down, now."

Now we just have runs that can either be unaffected or improved in quality of it was just the game audio with no commentary. Not even chat is fun anymore since they restrict it to subscribers-only. On top of that, it's over-moderated to the point you can't post a sleeping emote during a boring segment without getting timed out.

These days, there are runs that are above and beyond others that match previous years in quality, but there are so few of them now and the ones that aren't that quality are really, really bad now. There's none that are "mediocre but watchable." It's either one of the six runs where the runner has the most immaculate commentary in existence or else it's one of the other 200 runs that would violate the Geneva convention if you played it to torture somebody.

I still can't believe the "I would really prefer if you would be quiet right now" guy trooned out.

There was a let's play on youtube that got popular a while back, a guy who genuinely knew nothing about minecraft and he was trying to beat the game entirely without a guide. I had it on for background noise a couple nights in a row, really enjoying it, and then he gets a TTS donation that says "Can you say trans rights?" completely out of the blue. He then proceeded to say it like 5 times, sounding like he had a gun to his head. I'm not afraid to powerlevel and say I just turned off the video and never went back to any other episodes. I'm so sick of the faggots I have 0 tranny tolerance, to the point where I know I'm being irrational. It was a 3 second clip out of a 60 hour lets play, but my fatigue is so high it doesn't matter.

I also did that with a Tom Hanks movie about him being a grumpy, suicidal old man. Half way through the movie a troon suddenly appears and tells Tom how his wife was his teacher and accepted his transition, making Tom proud enough of his dead wife presumably not to kill himself. I don't know, because I didn't finish the movie.

I have fond memories of just leaving it on a monitor basically 24/7 in the early years. The Frosion dance, Naegleria popoffs, Trihex chinputs, Cosmo telling Mirrored to shut the fuck up, Werster being an edgelord, Carcinogen being an edgelord. Blueglass. That guy who wanted to speedrun some niche game and they didn't approve it so he submitted a Sim City speedrun and then went AFK and booted up another console did the other speedrun anyway. Cody Miller shitting the bed and then goatrope and Mr Monopoly redemptions. Even as recent as the Elder Scrolls franchise marathon where they spent five minutes trolling the audience by going back to the same dungeon and acting like it was a different place each time. Watching Skyrim and OOT get progressively more broken every year. And probably a million little things I've forgotten now. I don't know when exactly it became unwatchable but it's bittersweet.

I think people forget that until pretty recently it was not normal to play videogames past childhood, and in the early years AGDQ sort of had this vibe of like, "Yeah we know we're all losers and failures but maybe even people like us can do something good for society." It didn't pretend to be anything grand or glamorous, it was basically just losers from /v/ trying to do something useful for once, and a lot of the humor and good vibes were self-aware in that regard. Now a decade plus later, being a manchild has been normalized, e-celebrity is coveted, and it's all posturing and pageantry. It attracts people who want to be in the spotlight rather than people doing it for the love of the game, to the point that the speedrunning is practically an afterthought. Everybody thinks that playing a videogame on a stage in front of a webcam makes them the next Shroud or Ninja or XQC or whatever, they forget that being talented and/or entertaining is what got those retards on stages in the first place. Men pretending to be women, pretending to be gamers pretending to be athletes. Everybody wanna be a bodybuilder but don't nobody wanna lift no heavy ass weight.
