I've got to say, Undertale worked much better as the finale than I thought it would. This year's AGDQ wasn't too bad.

Still not sold on Undertale but other than the horrible constant schedule changes and poor communication between staff and runners it was a pretty great marathon.

The last day was rough and it was okay overall. Nothing happened so it was best as background noise. The final tally is amazing and it surprised the fuck out of me because I was expecting average money for how average the event was, but their donation incentives went an insanely long way.

I hope SGDQ will blow up in 2017. It's been stagnant the past two years even though it's for a better charity with a (usually) better lineup so I'd like to see it stand on its own two feet and match (or exceed) AGDQ.

I am hoping the large amount of money makes more game companies take notice of the GDQ events. It would be so cool to see more prize backs like what Bandai did.
Call it selling out if you must, but big sponsors makes for better events.

The main run room always feels so empty and old. The attendees would rather stay with friends and socialize in their rented hotel rooms (alcohol and such). They also get the feed directly on their TV ive heard. If they want to improve AGDQ, theres so much to improve it shouldnt be that hard. Id personally feature more games of the year, with devs/artists of said title. Exposure for new titles are very welcome anyway, they can share some giveaway stuff too. Its win-win.

Oh hell yes, I love when they have the devs in the room or on the line while their games are being played. They did that with Banjo titles a few years back, and last year they had someone who worked on Battle Block Theater on Skype. It was so cool to hear behind-the-scenes stuff about the games. IMO, devs telling stories while watching their games be broken make for the best runs.

Didn't think to check in the Games forum for an AGDQ thread, otherwise I'd have sperged along with you guys. :c

Overall I guess it was an okay marathon. Games Done Quick and Prevent Cancer Foundation always seem to be under a lot of "community scrutiny" and this year was really no exception. Maybe I'm just going crazy from old age but I swear the amount of PC police jumping up GDQ's ass on social media for every teeny tiny minuscule thing increased tenfold this year. I really, really hope their listen & believe mantra doesn't sink its hooks into an event that is already floundering.

Lots of runners are defecting to the North American Speedrun Assembly (NASA) and European Speedrunning Assembly (ESA), which are much more laid back marathons without a lot of bureaucratic intervention. There was also "RTA in Japan" held late last year, so speedrunning is taking root there too. If GDQ's organizers fuck things up there's a decent chance they could be obsoleted relatively quickly.

Anyways here's a repository of VOD links from /r/speedrun in the order they were broadcast. I'm still going through them, but the highlights for me have been: Shovel Knight, Kirby Tilt & Tumble (played on Gamecube and with a DDR pad  ), Super Monkey Ball runs, Cardcaptors Sakura Tetris, Intelligent Qube, Super Metroid Rotation, Doom 2016, Super Mario Bros races, Gauntlet, "Awful Games Done Quick" (Batman Forever -- WolfQuest, they are all hilarious), the "Mystery Game Tournament", Legend of Zelda LTTP race, Crash Bandicoot 2, Donkey Kong Country relay race, and of course TASbot. All of those are worth checking out if you're looking for cool stuff to watch.

edit: I believe the Battleblock Theater runners were Mecha Richter and PJDiCesare, both of whom were in attendance this year and had runs of their own. PJ was one half of the Batman Forever run, and I'm pretty sure Mecha did a Castlevania run.

I missed the last few days but sounds like the event went pretty well. I saw a clip where some guy tells the crowd to kill themselves for being annoying and thats pretty cool.

Also I heard the Dark Souls run was pretty bad. Some other DS runners got banned for streaming themselves shit talking the runner.

AGDQ 2017 Highlights

Now that I've had time to watch the runs, this year's AGDQ actually went well until that one dickwad told people to kill themselves over saying "wah". Made me feel extremely uncomfortable since I'm one of those assholes that spouts that meme off.

Anyways I like the runs and the games, not the people involved (save for a select few like Bonesaw and Darbian)

Sounds like you need to be acquainted with the hotel bus, honestly :epik:

More than that dumbass, I was frustrated at the announcer. He should have just brushed off the comment with a laugh, but instead he got all serious and made the situation awkward. Also, not sure the guy who said it deserved to be presumably banned (At least forced out of the rest of the event) from GDQ as much as blacklisted from running.

After I made that comment I found out more about this year's AGDQ, including what you just said.

Sorry for coming off as your usual sped, my next paragraph about the runners still counts though.

Fun fact: The runner for Vice City* (one of the less cringy runs IMO) was volunteering during the shuttle bus comment (and I'm sure many others), jumped ship to ihop after that remark.
Ihop: Your sugary refuge from Speedrunning related cringe.

Don't worry about it Lurkman, I was kidding. You are right that this years AGDQ actually went very well except for the very beginning and the very end. Also, #BringBackBonesaw

The event hasn't even started yet and there's already horrible audio spikes murdering everybody's eardrums.

Pre-show is starting in >5 minutes and one of the hosts is a tranny nobody's ever heard of. Because of course.

I generally avoid speedruns of new games I haven't seen full playthroughs of so I might tune out until Halo.

E: The tranny has a perfect man voice and I had no idea it was him until I tabbed in.
