Congolese forces lost in attacks on Munguerre and Butongwe in Haut-Uele province

Congo - Haut-Uele - Amaq News Agency: Congolese forces lost 17 soldiers and 20 others were wounded in fierce clashes in Haut-Uele province, in the far east of the country.

Military sources told Amaq News Agency that Islamic State fighters ambushed a Congolese army infantry force the day before yesterday as it attempted to advance towards the fighters' positions in the village of Munguerre.

The sources added that the fighters engaged the enemy soldiers with various machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades at close range, face to face. The sources revealed that the clashes resulted in the death of 13 soldiers and the wounding of at least 20 others, and that 9 rifles, 3 medium machine guns, and 2 rocket launchers were seized

Sources also reported another attack the following morning on a Congolese army barracks in the village of Butongwe.

The sources explained that the second attack resulted in the death of four soldiers, the flight of the rest, the burning of their barracks, and the seizure of their rifles.

With the arrival of the Islamic State attacks in Upper Uele in late April, it has become a new front of attrition for Congolese forces and their allies.
