I have been enjoying all the disney shills lose their shit and blaming Sony for the mess.
With the budget the last two spiderman have had, they could do worse than the AMS2 at the box office and Sony will still be making more money than they would have if they took the Disney deal, no one in their right mind would take that deal especially after Venom grossed $850 million without being linked to the MCU. Does this hurt Sony for sure but nowhere near as much as the deal Disney wanted would have which would have covered more than just the MCU Spider Man movies.
This not to say Sony are great, they aren't and always find ways to fuck them self over, but this isn't one of those cases.
Here are a few of those cases, shows issues with making "new" franchises
They tried to make Ghostbusters into a cinematic universe with a planned Slime spin off but that movie was shit and killed that idea, the awful marketing and costing way more than it should have (a common trend during the amy pascal era of Sony) also helped to kill that idea, right now they trying to reboot it again but this time with a smaller budget, making it a sequel to the original movies and not making the movie be 90& bad improv.
Men in Black was fucked over twice, first with Men in Black 3 which cost around $225 million before marketing and grossed around $625 million world wide, so not awful but the budget was again way too high, they also didn't have a script finished before the movie started filming. Director Barry Sonnenfeld, and stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones blame the producers and refuse to work with them on a Men In Black 4, they are also the reason give by Sonnenfeld why 2 and 3 aren't good. So Sony when with a soft reboot called Men in Black: International staring the leads of Thor 3, the budget was right this time being $110 million however the movie was even more shit than the past two and only grossed $253 million world wide, so with marketing costs would be shocked if they made money, director F. Gary Gray also blames the produces for the movie being shit, he nearly walked away at one point with the changes they were making to the script, worth noting the producers did reshoots and had the final cut. Also a Men in Black Jump Street was planned and killed.
Goosebumps 2 was pretty low budget at around $35 million and only grossed $93 worldwide, so hard to say if it made any profit however the first one made over $150, so Sony would want to see a growth in the series, they made the issue putting out the movie the same time Jack Black the star of the first movie new kids "horror" movie out meaning they eat into each others sales, second issue was it's the same movie of the first movie and nothing new thus hurting word of month. Right now no plans for a 3rd one.
The Girl in the Spider's Web, they waited too long make a follow up to David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo which did pretty well with a world wide gross $232 million, so by the time they make one they replace everyone and skip to the fourth book, the movie mostly got bad or meh review which is a death nail for the type of people who see these types of movies, had they started sooner and keep the David Fincher cast they could have had an alright series going. in term of box office gross
The Dark Tower, too many thing to list that went wrong, but here is a few, bad script, race changing the main character for no reason, not being based on any of the book but a sequel to them thus missing any character development. Was meant to be a big franchise for Sony with multiple movies plan along with a TV show, in 2018 Amazon bought they rights and is rebooting it as a TV show.
Robocop 2014, funny thing the movie didn't do awful it made $243 million world wide on a budget of $100 million, so unless marketing costs were bad shit should have brought in some money, however the reaction of the movie wasn't great so likely a Robocop 2 would have flopped even if they did fix the issues with the first one. Total Recall remake they did is pretty similar apart it flopped and got even worse reviews, were plans for a follow up before it flopped.
