Sony Wins Quentin Tarantino’s Charles Manson Movie (and It Might Star Brad, Leo, or Tom)

Sony has won the bidding war for Quentin Tarantino’s next movie, a drama set in Los Angeles in the 1970s and ‘80s, during the time of the Manson murders. After Harvey Weinstein’s sexual-assault scandal erupted, Tarantino pulled the feature — referred to as #9, since it’s the director’s ninth movie — from the Weinstein Company, despite working with the Weinsteins throughout his career. Sony beat out the likes of Paramount and Warner Bros., according to Deadline. Fox, Universal, Annapurna, and Lionsgate were also vying for distribution rights to the film. Per Variety: In an effort to woo Tarantino, Warner Bros. adorned its entrance with cars from the 1960s and outfitted a conference room with vintage furniture. Sony, meanwhile, made a “multimedia presentation.”

Details on the movie are sparse — initially, the studios themselves had to read the script at the offices of WME, which reps Tarantino — but it’s said to be plotted similarly to Inglourious Basterds. Deadline reports that Tarantino has met with all your 1990s crushes — Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and Leonardo DiCaprio — for the two lead male roles in the ensemble, and wants Margot Robbie to play Sharon Tate.

I don't hate Tarantino but putting him in charge of a Manson Family movie is fucking wretched.

It's like, you wouldn't fucking ask Paul Verhouven to make a 9/11 flick, would you?

I didn't even know that they remade Flatliners. I liked the original. I think I'll keep liking it and forget this one.

Has anyone seen it? How bad is it anyway?

The Helter Skelter stuff is going to be so problematic.

So will Cruise, Pitt and DiCaprio be playing victims? Cops? Family members?

I've really seen enough Manson stuff to last me several lifetimes. But I am curious of what direction will be taken.

From the sounds of the article, they may end up be in the running to play Manson himself. Which would be interesting to see how that pans out.

Sony for certain has been through some rough last 5 years with alot of its problems stemming from neglecting their tentpole movies. Taking care of your tentpoles allows you to fund your riskier and smaller projects that might make great returns or nominal ones at least. Most of the problems helming Sony is that they don't have any meaningful tentpoles and have jackasses in the helms of leadership. It is so bad that I was stunned when Jumanji performed so well.

Isn't Slenderman a Something Awful thing? Would LowT get a cut?
Or more likely, Would LowT bitch inanely at Sony about his supposed rightful share, like he bitches at Notch?
oh ho ho that's "Slenderman" one word
this movie is clearly about a different guy, "Slender Man". two words. Way different.

I don't know what was worse, the Emoji Movie, or the delusional cartoon spergs who were convinced it was some sort of "brainwashing plot" to "get kids addicted to their smartphones".
The latter. I knew The Emoji Movie was going to be shit when I saw the title.

If any studio was going to release a Slenderman movie eight years late, it had to be Sony Pictures.

:late: As fuck? Yep. As for a Jeff the Killer movie? You’d be better off watching Rob Zombie’s “Halloween.”
But if there were two films I genuinely am excited for from Sony, are “Venom,” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” the latter being a collar with Marvel Studios, and written by people who worked on Rise of the Guardians, The Lego Movie, and the creator of Gravity Falls even got in on the film.
Venom will probably be shit though.
EDIT: Checked who was directing “Slender Man,” and it’ll be shit, just by looking at the guy’s track record.

Venom has been confirmed to be an R rated Deadpool like film starring Tom Hardy as Venom. If anyone can fuck up that awesome of a concept Sony can.

Venom needs to be Eddie Brock played by Brock Lesnar and the symbiote voiced by Paul Heyman. Venom is both at once.
